The purpose of this post is to support and enhance the hospital’s systems for Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, and Clinical Risk Management, in line with HSE, CHKS \& HIQA National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare. The post holder will play a key role in promoting a culture of quality and safety, coordinating quality improvement initiatives, supporting risk identification and mitigation, and ensuring compliance with relevant governance, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.

The Quality and Risk Coordinator will report directly to the Head of Quality and Risk, and work in collaboration with the Senior Management Team, Clinical Nurse Managers, and Multidisciplinary Teams. The Quality and Risk Coordinator will lead and participate in relevant hospital committees, including the Clinical Quality \& Risk Committee and Clinical Governance Team.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Improvement

  • Lean on and support the design, implementation, and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives across clinical and non\-clinical departments.

  • Assist in the development and monitoring of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and quality dashboards.

  • Accountable for the clinical audit programme, ensuring audits are planned, completed,and results disseminated effectively.

  • Support departments in developing improvement action plans and tracking progress.

  • Prepare quality and risk reports for committees, management teams, and regulatory reviews.
Risk Management and Patient Safety
  • Oversee and analyse incident reporting, ensuring timely investigation, trend analysis, and feedback.

  • Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the implementation of corrective actions following adverse events or near misses.

  • Maintain and monitor the hospitals clinical risks register, ensuring appropriate escalation and mitigation strategies are in place.

  • Assist in developing and reviewing clinical and non\-clinical policies and procedures to ensure compliance with current standards and legislation.

  • Coordinate learning from incidents and promote proactive risk management across departments.
Governance and Compliance
  • Lead and support clinical teams in compliance with HIQA standards, HSE National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare, and other statutory and accreditation requirements (e.g. CHKS).

  • Assist with internal and external audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.

  • Contribute to the development and review of the hospital’s Quality and Patient Safety Strategy.
Complaints Management
  • Coordinate and oversee the formal complaints management process, ensuring complaints are acknowledged, investigated, responded to and closed within required timeframes and in line with hospital policy.

  • Analyse complaint themes and trends, identify learning and improvement opportunities, and ensure actions arising from complaints are monitored and communicated through appropriate governance structures.
Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Liaison
  • Act as the Quality and Risk liaison with the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team, ensuring relevant IPC surveillance data, trends and infection\-related incidents inform quality and risk monitoring.

  • Ensure infection\-related risks and incidents are appropriately reflected in the clinical risk register, with escalation and mitigation actions tracked as required.

  • Represent Quality and Risk at relevant IPC committee meetings and support shared learning, reporting and follow\-up of actions arising from IPC surveillance and incidents.
Education and Training
  • Deliver and support staff education programmes in Quality Improvement, Risk Management, and Patient Safety.

  • Facilitate debriefs, feedback sessions, and learning events following incidents.

  • Promote continuous professional development and a culture of shared learning.
Communication and Teamwork
  • Build effective working relationships with clinical, managerial, and support teams to embed quality and safety principles.

  • Provide expert advice and guidance on matters related to quality and risk.

  • Contribute to a positive and open reporting culture within the organisation.
Essential Criteria

*Knowledge/Experience*

  • Registered Nurse (NMBI) / or other relevant healthcare qualification.

  • Postgraduate qualification in Quality, Risk Management, Patient Safety, Healthcare Governance, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of five years’ post\-registration experience, including at least

  • two years in a quality, risk, or governance role.

  • Formal qualification or training in Quality Improvement methodologies, such as Lean or Six Sigma (desirable).

  • Demonstrated experience in clinical audit, incident management, and

  • quality improvement methodologies.

  • Experience working within an accredited healthcare organisation (e,g Chks) and/or the private hospital/ healthcare sector.

  • Knowledge of HSE and HIQA standards, National Incident Management Framework (NIMF), and relevant legislation.

  • Strong analytical, organisational, and report\-writing skills.

  • Competence in electronic incident and risk management systems, including data extraction, analysis and reporting.

  • Experience in the use of the MEG incident management system or similar (desirable).
