As part of this, the Governance, Risk, Assurance \& Improvement (GRAI) team plays a critical role in enabling the Southern Railway System to operate with confidence \-connecting governance, risk management, assurance and improvement to support better outcomes across the Southern Rail System.

About the role
------------------

The Enterprise Risk Account Manager, is a member of the Governance, Risk and Assurance team and plays a critical role in enabling the Southern Region to successfully deliver its operational, financial, and strategic objectives. Working across the Region and Integrated Business Units (IBU), the role provides expert leadership and assurance on the identification, assessment, management, and escalation of enterprise and operational level risks that could impact the performance, sustainability, and reputation of Network Rail.

The postholder will work collaboratively with IBU and regional leaders, functional heads, and national risk teams to embed a consistent, proactive, and value¿adding risk management approach, ensuring that risks are understood, owned, and managed within agreed appetite. The role supports informed decision¿making by providing clear insight into emerging threats, opportunities, and control effectiveness across business.

Operating within a complex, highly regulated rail environment, the Enterprise Risk Account Manager will ensure that risk management is fully aligned with Network Rail's Safety Vision, business planning processes, and governance framework, and that the Southern Rail System meets its obligations to passengers, freight customers, and stakeholders.

The role is instrumental in strengthening risk maturity across the region, promoting a positive risk culture, and ensuring that strategic, enterprise and operational risks are effectively articulated, monitored, and escalated to IBU, Regional and Corporate governance forums.

What you'll be doing:

  • Deliver specialist advice on how best identify, prioritise, and manage risks for designated accounts, using Network Rail's ERM framework, to help them to develop their risk registers and make risk\-based decisions.

  • Provide expert advice and training on the ERM framework, tools, and processes via informal meetings as well as formal training sessions to improve risk management capability. This includes monitoring adherence to the ERM framework and its processes, so accounts achieve compliance.

  • Provide feedback on areas for improvement and working with accounts on action plans.

  • Evaluate risk data for your accounts, challenging account stakeholders to appropriately document risks using the ERM process to facilitate consistent reporting at enterprise level for executive leadership and the Board.

  • Deliver the relevant reporting requirements to support Southern Region governance for Periodic Business Reviews and Business Assurance committees.

  • Facilitate risk workshops to develop new risks, upskilling attendees on how best to undertake their own workshops, helping to embed a risk culture and improving capability across the organisation.

  • Support the ongoing improvements to the Enterprise Risk Management framework and risk management activities through leading on improvement projects.

  • Attend risk governance meetings, providing challenge in risk discussions and insights from internal and external sources, as well as answering question on best practice risk approaches.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant internal policies, external regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Collaborate with Integrated Business Units and Regional functions to support alignment of business processes, emerging risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with the GRAI assurance team to develop and lead an integrated Risk and Assurance service for the Southern Rail system.

Your experience and skills
------------------------------

What you'll have:

Essential:

  • Recognised qualification in risk management (IRM certificate, Diploma or equivalent).

  • Evidence of subject matter expert in Enterprise Risk Management. Proven knowledge of one or more of the main risk management standards (e.g. ISO 31000, HM Treasury's Orange Book).

  • Detailed understanding of risk process and their application in operational risk assessment methods, having used risk management software.

  • Trained and experienced facilitator with proven experience of facilitating multifunctional groups of senior managers.

  • Evidence of influencing and interpersonal skills, and of managing relationships and expectations with key stakeholders. Desirable:

  • Proven process management and process improvement experience

  • Detailed understanding of the railway industry (or other regulated organisations) its key business processes and interfaces

  • Having worked in close collaboration with assurance and improvement colleagues

  • Proven experience of working in a safety critical industry

  • Experience of working in a large complex organisation in a risk capacity

  • Educated to degree level
