About the role
------------------
We are looking for an Asset Engineer to join our Drainage Asset Management team on the Sussex Route.
As part of Network Rail's Southern Region, our team is responsible for ensuring the safety, reliability, and functionality of a diverse drainage asset portfolio across one of the busiest rail networks in the country. This includes track drainage systems, culverts, catchpits, and other essential water management assets that protect the railway from flooding and deterioration.
The successful candidate will play a key role in making informed, evidence¿based decisions to manage these assets effectively. You will contribute to developing and implementing strategic intervention strategies and support the application of drainage asset management processes in line with Network Rail standards and policies. Your work will help us deliver a safe, reliable, and resilient railway for the communities we serve.
You will also be involved in identifying, prioritising, and remitting schemes for delivery by our partners, ensuring they align with our Strategic Business Plan.

While previous experience in drainage or asset management is desirable, strong analytical and communication skills are essential. This role is based in London Puddle Dock, with the expectation of 3 days in the office per week and remainder of the week as remote working, which can be substituted with site visits depending on frequency of visits.
Key Accountabilities
¿ Strategic Oversight:
Provide technical leadership lineside asset management, ensuring activities are aligned with strategic objectives and long¿term route needs.
¿ Asset Inspection \& Evaluation:
Oversee the inspection, condition assessment, and evaluation of lineside assets, ensuring compliance with current standards, procedures, and policies.
¿ Investment \& Work Planning:
Develop and maintain lineside asset management plans, shaping investment priorities and monitoring delivery through to completion.
¿ Project Sponsorship:
Support the Route Asset Manager by developing business cases and sponsoring renewal schemes. Work with delivery teams throughout the PACE lifecycle \- from feasibility through to handback.
¿ Technical Handover:
Ensure renewals are handed over with clear specifications, technical documentation, and maintenance requirements.
¿ Risk \& Control Management:
Specify and monitor control measures where interventions are deferred or require additional risk mitigation.
¿ Accurate Asset Records:
Maintain high¿quality asset data, track condition trends, and recommend actions to improve performance and resilience.
¿ Deputisation \& Leadership Support:
Deputise for the Senior Asset Engineer when required and contribute to the development of national standards for lineside engineering.
¿ Cross¿Functional Guidance:
Provide specialist guidance to internal teams, helping resolve multidisciplinary issues and supporting collaborative working.
¿ Incident Investigation:
Take part in the investigation of incidents related to lineside asset performance.
¿ External Engagement:
Lead engagement with local authorities, and external partners on lineside strategy, and lineside asset issues.

Your experience and skills

Essential:
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Significant experience in infrastructure drainage with proven abilities in examination, evaluation, maintenance, and repair.
- Sound knowledge of drainage policies and standards.
- Sound knowledge of drainage design methods (simple and complex).
- Understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques.
- Understanding of Construction Design and Management Regulations.
- Progress towards membership of a relevant professional institution.
- Experience in application of drainage design methods (simple and complex).
- Degree in a relevant subject.
- Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer.
- Membership in a relevant professional institution.
