Steering Systems Engineer (Marine)
Steering Systems Engineer
*Navitron Systems Ltd – Part of the John Lilley \& Gillie Group of Companies*
Navitron Systems Ltd is a leading UK independent marine electronics company who specialise in the design and manufacture of classification society approved main steering controls and a comprehensive range of type approved autopilot systems and associated equipment for commercial vessel applications.
Role Overview
Navitron Systems Ltd is seeking a Steering Systems Engineer to support the configuration, integration, and ongoing development of steering control systems across the Navitron product range. The successful candidate must be able to hit the ground running, analysing existing vessel steering installations and developing bespoke system configurations using Navitron products that integrate reliably with the vessel’s current onboard equipment. The role combines system configuration, repair support, and engineering development, requiring a multidisciplinary background across electronics, electrical systems, software behaviour, and mechanical integration. Given the wide range of vessel configurations and the long service life of marine installations, familiarity with existing Navitron steering systems and historical product designs will significantly assist in diagnosing issues and developing suitable system configurations.
The role will be based at our new production facility in Birmingham and is likely to require extensive travel both within the UK and overseas.
Key Responsibilities
*Steering System Configuration \& Integration*
· Analyse existing steering systems installed on vessels and determine compatibility with Navitron equipment.
· Develop bespoke steering system configurations tailored to the vessel’s existing steering arrangement and onboard electronics.
· Provide technical recommendations for system integration using Navitron steering control units and associated components.
· Support installers and customers in configuring steering systems correctly.
*Technical Support \& Repairs*
· Assist with repair cases related to steering and autopilot systems.
· Diagnose faults on returned units and contribute to identifying root causes.
· Provide troubleshooting support for customers experiencing steering system issues.
· Work with production and engineering teams to resolve recurring system issues and improve reliability.
*Installation \& Field Support*
· Provide technical guidance for the installation and commissioning of steering systems.
· Assist with on\-site troubleshooting and commissioning support when required.
· Liaise with vessel engineers, installers and technical personnel to ensure correct system operation.
*Engineering \& Product Development Support*
· Work closely with the R\&D Department Manager on engineering projects.
· Support product testing, validation, and investigation of technical issues.
· Contribute to improvements of steering system designs based on field feedback and repair data.
· Assist with documentation, testing procedures and system evaluation activities.
Required Technical Background
