We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to support two interconnected, internationally funded research projects focused on advancing inclusive mobility through innovative digital technologies. The projects explore how digital twins, augmented reality (AR), and AI\-enabled systems can improve accessibility and navigation for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. The role involves working closely with academic researchers, wheelchair users, students, transport and disability organisations to co\-develop user\-centred solutions for more inclusive transport systems.
You will contribute to two projects: *Scaling Inclusive Mobility from Campus to City and Beyond* (funded through the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account at Aston University) and *Development of a Digital Twin and AI\-Enabled Walkway Monitoring System* (funded by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, South Korea). Together, these projects aim to better understand accessibility barriers and develop practical technologies that support safer and more independent mobility.
You will support the design, delivery, and evaluation of research activities, including interviews, surveys, focus groups, workshops, user trials and public engagement events. The role also involves assisting with the development and testing of AR navigation tools and digital twin technologies, analysing qualitative and quantitative data, and contributing to reports, academic publications, conference presentations, and project dissemination activities.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to research that shapes accessible transport solutions at local, national and international levels, while gaining experience in inclusive design and emerging technologies. The projects are delivered in collaboration with LBSTech and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, providing valuable international exposure. You will also gain hands on experience with tools such as AR based navigation and the Birmingham Digital Twin.
