Job Summary
Bernard Berger Ltd operates two busy convenience stores in Oldham. We are seeking an organised and commercially focused Purchasing Manager to manage purchasing, stock availability, supplier relationships and promotional planning across both stores.
The successful candidate will source and purchase products from wholesalers, cash\-and\-carry outlets and other approved suppliers. The role also involves monitoring product performance, negotiating prices, coordinating promotions and supporting general store operations. The employee may occasionally be required to serve customers and operate the till when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
\- Develop and manage purchasing plans for both stores based on sales performance, customer demand and seasonal requirements.
\- Purchase groceries, beverages, confectionery, household goods and other retail products from wholesalers, cash\-and\-carry outlets and approved suppliers.
\- Visit cash\-and\-carry outlets and supplier premises to inspect, select and purchase suitable products when required.
\- Compare supplier prices, product quality, availability, delivery arrangements and payment terms.
\- Negotiate competitive prices, discounts, promotional deals and improved trading terms with suppliers.
\- Prepare and place purchase orders while maintaining accurate purchasing records, invoices and supplier documentation.
\- Monitor stock levels across both stores and ensure essential and fast\-selling products remain available.
\- Review sales and stock information to identify high\-demand, profitable, slow\-moving and underperforming products.
\- Coordinate stock transfers between the two stores to maintain availability and reduce unnecessary purchasing.
\- Plan promotions, special offers and seasonal product ranges in consultation with store management.
\- Source suitable products for festivals, holidays, local events and changing customer preferences.
\- Ensure promotional products are purchased in appropriate quantities and delivered before campaigns begin.
\- Monitor supplier performance and resolve shortages, damaged stock, incorrect deliveries and pricing discrepancies.
\- Control purchasing costs and help improve product margins while maintaining quality and value for customers.
\- Reduce waste, overstocking and stock shortages by improving ordering and stock\-control procedures.
\- Check that purchased products comply with relevant food safety, labelling, age\-restriction and retail requirements.
\- Support delivery checks, stock counts and inventory reviews across both stores.
\- Maintain positive working relationships with wholesalers, cash\-and\-carry operators and other suppliers.
\- Assist customers and operate the till during busy periods, staff shortages or other operational requirements.
\- Prepare reports for senior management covering purchases, supplier performance, stock levels, savings and promotional results.
Skills
\- Strong purchasing and supplier\-management skills.
\- Good negotiation and communication abilities.
\- Sound commercial awareness and understanding of retail profit margins.
\- Ability to analyse sales, pricing and stock information.
\- Strong planning, organisation and record\-keeping skills.
\- Ability to manage purchasing requirements across two stores.
\- Good IT skills, including spreadsheets, email and retail stock systems.
Qualifications
\- A relevant qualification in business, purchasing, supply chain management, retail management or a related subject is desirable.
\- Equivalent professional training or relevant practical experience will also be considered.
\- A valid UK driving licence is desirable because the role may involve travelling between stores, suppliers and cash\-and\-carry outlets.
Experience
\- Previous experience in purchasing, retail operations, stock control or supplier management is preferred.
\- Experience in convenience retail, grocery retail, wholesale or a similar environment would be advantageous.
\- Experience purchasing products from wholesalers or cash\-and\-carry outlets is desirable.
