Job Summary

The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer supports the delivery of mechanical building services projects through the production of designs, calculations, technical documentation, and coordinated engineering solutions. Working under the direction of Mechanical Engineers and Senior Engineers, the role involves contributing to projects across a range of sectors while developing technical expertise, project awareness, and industry knowledge.

The position requires effective communication, strong organisational skills, and a proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will take ownership of allocated tasks, contribute to multidisciplinary project teams, and progressively develop the skills required for advancement to Mechanical Engineer level.

Relationships

  • Report to the Senior Engineer or Project/Business Director.

  • Work closely with Mechanical and Electrical Engineers within the project team.

  • Receive technical guidance and support from Senior Engineers and Project/Business Directors as required.

  • Collaborate with Graduate Engineers and other team members to support successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake mechanical building services design activities, including the preparation of calculations, layouts, specifications, schedules, and technical reports.

  • Assist in the design and coordination of domestic water services, ventilation, heating, cooling, and associated building services systems.

  • Produce accurate and timely design information in accordance with project requirements, company standards, and agreed programmes.

  • Coordinate design activities with mechanical, electrical, sustainability, and other project disciplines to support integrated project delivery.

  • Attend project meetings as required and contribute to discussions regarding design development, progress, and technical solutions.

  • Manage personal workload effectively, communicating progress and any technical or programme concerns to the project lead.

  • Support sustainability assessments and modelling exercises by providing and reviewing design data and technical information.

  • Participate in design reviews and verification activities, ensuring work is thoroughly checked prior to submission for quality assurance review.

  • Assist in maintaining project documentation and ensuring compliance with company quality management procedures.

  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment by sharing knowledge, supporting

  • colleagues, and participating in continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development by actively expanding technical knowledge and awareness of industry best practice, emerging technologies, and design methodologies.
Client and Team Contribution
  • Maintain professional and positive relationships with clients, design team members, contractors, and other project stakeholders.

  • Support senior team members in responding to client queries and delivering a high standard of service.

  • Contribute to maintaining the company's reputation for quality, responsiveness, and technical excellence.

  • Provide support and guidance to Graduate Engineers where appropriate and contribute positively to team development.
Technical Requirements
  • Working knowledge of current Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, British Standards, BSRIA publications, and other relevant industry design standards.

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and industry\-standard engineering software, including AutoCAD and Hevacomp or equivalent design tools.

  • Understanding of mechanical building services design principles and their practical application within multidisciplinary projects.

  • Ability to interpret technical information and apply engineering judgement with appropriate support and supervision.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Typically 1–3 years' relevant industry experience within building services engineering or a related sector.

  • Demonstrable experience contributing to the design and delivery of mechanical building services projects.

  • Working towards professional accreditation with CIBSE or an equivalent engineering institution.

  • Enthusiastic, organised, and motivated to develop technical capability and progress towards Mechanical Engineer level.
Pay: £36,500\.00\-£38,500\.00 per year
