General Manager

The Company: Fast growing family\-run business, experienced ownership. Suppliers of premium fabrics, wallpapers and accessories to the retail/ interior design market, UK \& worldwide.

Position Overview: Reporting directly to the Business Owner, the General Manager (GM) will serve as the strategic and operational engine of the company. The successful candidate will translate the owner’s vision into actionable plans, driving profitability, streamlining operations, and fostering a high\-performance culture. This is a high\-autonomy role requiring a leader who balances high\-level strategy with hands\-on operational excellence.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership \& Team Management

  • Executive Partnership: Collaborate with the Owner to convert long\-term vision into measurable operational milestones.

  • Departmental Oversight: Directly manage, mentor, and hold accountable five key Department Heads: Finance, Customer Service, Marketing, Procurement, and Warehouse.

  • HR: Oversee the full employee lifecycle—recruitment, performance evaluations, and professional development—in partnership with external HR.

  • Working Culture: Cultivate a transparent, high\-accountability workplace culture and resolve internal conflicts with diplomacy.
Operational Excellence
  • Process Optimization: Drive the continuous improvement of the ERP system and internal workflows to maximize efficiency.

  • Health \& Safety: Act as the primary custodian of H\&S policy, ensuring 100% compliance and proactive risk management.

  • Supply Chain \& Logistics: Oversee procurement, inventory health, and warehouse functionality to ensure strict adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Financial \& Commercial Performance
  • P\&L Management: Partner with the Finance Manager to oversee the P\&L, manage budgets, and implement cost\-control measures to drive EBITDA growth.

  • Digital Growth: Supervise the "Head of Digital" to optimize web performance, marketing spend (ROI), and the output of the Social Media and Digital Marketing teams.

  • Customer Experience: Ensure service lead times and quality standards meet or exceed customer expectations through rigorous process reviews.
Success Metrics (KPIs)
  • Achievement of annual profit and revenue targets.

  • Operational efficiency gains (reduction in lead times/warehouse errors).

  • Team retention and performance scores.

  • Website conversion rates and Marketing ROAS (Return on Ad Spend).
Candidate Profile

Required Skills:

  • Decisive Leadership: A proven ability to lead managers, delegate effectively, and drive accountability.

  • Financial Literacy: Comprehensive understanding of P\&L statements, budgeting, and financial forecasting.

  • Strategic Problem\-Solving: Ability to identify bottlenecks and implement scalable solutions rapidly.

  • Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide concise, data\-driven updates to the Owner.
Experience \& Education:
  • Experience: Minimum 5\+ years in a General Management or Operations Director role (preferably within E\-commerce, Distribution, or Retail).

  • Track Record: Demonstrated success in scaling operations and managing multi\-disciplinary teams.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, or a related field (preferred).

  • Tech Savvy: Proficient in ERP systems and modern project management tools.
Pay: £70,000\.00\-£90,000\.00 per year
