What you need to know about the role
Scunthorpe Rail \& Section Mill (SRSM) is British Steel’s primary production asset for our world leading rail business \- and also our strategically important medium sections offering into the construction sector. Together; SRSM and our Teesside Beam Mill\- produce the world best construction products into some of the world’s most iconic buildings and structures. Our rails and internationally renowned for quality and we are supplying many prestigious projects across the globe, currently including three high speed rail projects in Turkey and a brand new project in Egypt.
As Area Technical Manager, you will act as the primary technical lead on day\-to\-day processes, technical and quality issues and you will be responsible for ensuring that all products are compliant with customer specifications \- and take ownership of SRSM area 1’s quality management system.
Customer support activities are a key part of the role, including complaint management, working with the commercial team vetting customer enquiries \- and building strong technical relationships to influence customer decisions. Some travel, including overseas, may be required from time to time.
You will support the introduction of new products and processes whilst representing the business to external organisations, including customers on key technical issues.
Providing knowledge and expertise of products and processes to Sales and Marketing, Customer Service, Operations and Testing Solutions you will manage systems to ensure customer orders translate to correct processing outputs.
Appropriate technical knowledge is crucial to the success of the team, and you need to ensure that technical competence is developed whilst setting behavioural standards. You will also be involved in the preparation and delivery of technical training.
What we need to know about you
We’re looking for a degree qualified technical professional. A materials or physical science degree is preferred although relevant experience will also be taken into account.
Ideally you should have a clear interest or have experience in technical activities associated with steel processing and/or development. Knowledge of QA systems and strong communications skills, including reporting, would be a distinct advantage and you should have a strong customer focus. You need to be capable of taking responsibility and initiative as well as being enthusiastic and self\-motivated.
