Abattoir Manager

We’re recruiting an Abattoir Manager for our new Dorset facility, a key leadership position that will help shape the future of one of the UK’s leading beef processing businesses.

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving operational excellence, maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and compliance, developing people and ensuring the facility is positioned for long\-term success.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead the day to day running of the abattoir, delivering production plans and throughput targets
- Oversee slaughter, dressing, and transfer into downstream operations (including 5th Quarter)
- Optimise labour planning and deployment across all areas
- Drive improvements in yield, waste reduction, and line efficiency
- Monitor and act on key KPIs (throughput, downtime, productivity)
- Ensure full compliance with BRCGS standards, HACCP, and internal procedures
- Maintain audit readiness at all times, working closely with the Technical team
- Promote a strong food safety culture across all teams
- Ensure compliance with WATOK regulations and company animal welfare standards
- Build strong relationships with Official Veterinarians (OVs) and FSA representatives
- Ensure all operatives are trained and competent in humane handling practices
- Take full accountability for health \& safety within the abattoir
- Lead incident investigations and implement preventative actions
- Foster a proactive safety culture and ensure PPE compliance
- Lead, coach, and develop Supervisors and Team Leaders
- Drive accountability for performance, absence, and conduct
- Manage employee relations issues in line with company policy and ACAS guidance
- Support engagement, training, and succession planning
- Control labour costs and overtime within budget
- Deliver productivity improvements in line with site targets
- Support cost\-saving initiatives with Finance and Operations
- Work closely with Technical, Engineering, HR, and Supply Chain teams
- Contribute to site\-wide continuous improvement initiatives
- Proven experience in a red meat abattoir or meat processing environment
- Strong knowledge of FSA requirements, WATOK, and BRCGS standards
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing large operational teams
- Track record of improving performance and driving results
- HACCP Level 3 (or above)
- IOSH or NEBOSH qualification
- Experience in high\-throughput beef processing
- Understanding of 5th Quarter/offal operations
- Lean or Continuous Improvement experience
