JOB TITLE: Senior Engineering Workshop Technician (Maintenance \& Machining)

NORMAL LOCATION: Silverstone

SCALE \& SALARY RANGE: £34k to £39k FTE pro rata (£29k to £33k actual)

HOURS OF WORK: 34\.5 hours per week, term time \+ 2 weeks (41 weeks)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Faculty \- Engineering

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

Based within the Silverstone circuit, Silverstone UTC is a purpose\-built centre of excellence for young people wanting to break into the specialist fields of High\-Performance Engineering and Business with Events Management.

This is an exciting time to join the Engineering team at Silverstone UTC. Following the landmark investment by the Gene Haas Foundation to establish the new Gene Haas Centre for Advanced Manufacturing, the UTC is embarking on a transformational period of growth and development that will further strengthen its position at the heart of the UK's Motorsport Valley. With significant investment planned in industry\-standard equipment, including advanced CNC machinery, metrology equipment and professional CAD facilities, students will have access to world\-class engineering resources that mirror those used across Formula 1 and advanced manufacturing industries.

The Senior Engineering Workshop Technician will play a key role in supporting this exciting journey, working closely with teaching staff and industry partners to help deliver an exceptional technical learning environment. The postholder will lead the technician team, including a junior technician, oversee the operation and development of workshop facilities, and support students across all engineering disciplines through practical learning activities. As the Haas project develops and the UTC expands its engineering provision, there will be opportunities for the successful candidate to further develop their own role within a growing and ambitious engineering team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Preparation of workshop apparatus/equipment and materials as required, advising and assisting in the preparation and trialling of practicals and examinations and to keep confidentiality where necessary.

· To collect and replace equipment and materials after use and clean when necessary.

· To check and maintain equipment is in good working order and, where possible, light repair of apparatus.

· To assist with supervision of students while working with the engineering equipment, including mills and lathes.

· To work with the teachers to develop lessons, work plans and the classroom environment.

· To support student achievement by providing constructive feedback to students on their work measured against the learning outcomes.

· To be proactive in managing behaviour, promoting self\-control, independence and integration of the students.

· To assist with the ordering \& storage of equipment, stock and stationery.

· Organising the stock taking of all equipment, with relevant risk assessments, and using storage and disposal arrangements as required.

· Safe disposal of restricted waste materials.

· To check and update the department’s inventory, on an annual basis.

· To undertake routine safety checks as prescribed and maintain a safe environment.

· To be responsible for the operation and up\-keep of test rigs and associated equipment as well as handling of high value components.

· Responsibility for Health and Safety within engineering department, writing risk assessments and operating procedures for experiments, tests and demonstrations, informing staff about potential risks when necessary. Ensuring Health and Safety records are accurately maintained and up to date.

· Conduct training on testing equipment and overseeing the operation of it.

· To attend relevant courses concerning the work of technicians and to keep up to date on Health and Safety matters.

· To act as a First Aider for the area.

Probationary period

The postholder should be able to do the job competently after 6 months

Education and Qualifications

Must hold an engineering qualification.(Essential)

Experience and knowledge

Previous technician experience. (Essential)

Experience of working in an engineering environment(Essential)

Experience of managing and organising resources.(Essential)

A good knowledge of relevant Health and Safety requirements.(Essential)

Demonstrable knowledge of Equality and Diversity.(Essential)

Understanding of Child and Vulnerable Adult protection (Safeguarding Agenda) and the willingness to increase knowledge.(Desirable)

Previous experience working in an educational environment.(Desirable)

Skills and Abilities

Milling, Turning, CNC \& workshop maintenance experience (Essential)

Relevant practical skills.(Essential)

Well organised with excellent attention to detail.(Essential)

Good interpersonal, time management and organisation skills.(Essential)

Pay: £29,000\.00\-£33,000\.00 per year
