Retail Supervisor – Pharmacy Retail, Merchandising and Counter Assistant Support

Location: Based at Somercotes, with regular support to Alfreton and potential support to additional branches in South Nottinghamshire

Hours: 37\.5 hours per week, with occasional weekend cover as required. The role may include support to additional branches as the retail support function expands.

Travel Requirement: This is a branch\-support role and will require travel between pharmacy branches. A car and the ability to travel independently are required to fulfil the responsibilities of the role. Mileage will be paid for qualifying travel of more than 10 miles within Derbyshire between branches, in line with company arrangements.

About the Role

We are seeking an ambitious and hands\-on Retail Supervisor to join our pharmacy team.

The role will be based primarily at our Somercotes branch, with responsibility for supporting the Alfreton branch in:

  • Retail merchandising

  • Stock presentation

  • Retail sales improvement

  • Pharmacy counter assistant duties

  • Customer service and customer engagement

  • Product and promotion training for pharmacy teams
As the role develops, the successful candidate may also support additional branches in South Nottinghamshire.

Nature of the Work

This is a practical, customer\-facing retail and pharmacy counter role within a community pharmacy setting. The successful candidate will take responsibility for:

  • Ensuring retail shelves are fully merchandised

  • Ordering and managing retail stock effectively

  • Moving, organising and replenishing stock across retail areas

  • Planning and implementing promotions

  • Maintaining retail displays to a high standard

  • Supporting over\-the\-counter sales

  • Handling basic customer enquiries

  • Training pharmacy team members on products, promotions and retail selling opportunities

  • Referring customers to trained pharmacy colleagues where professional advice is required
Physical Stock Handling

The role requires regular stock handling and shelf replenishment. The successful candidate must be physically able to manage a considerable volume of stock movement, including:

  • Light to medium lifting

  • Unpacking deliveries

  • Organising products

  • Replenishing shelves

  • Rotating stock

  • Maintaining retail displays safely and efficiently
Attention to Detail

The role requires strong attention to both numerical and written detail. The retail area involves hundreds of product lines, including different:

  • Brands

  • Strengths

  • Pack sizes

  • Prices

  • Promotions

  • Expiry dates
Accuracy is essential when ordering stock, checking deliveries, updating prices, rotating products, maintaining displays and ensuring that products are placed correctly.

Pharmacy Retail and Counter Support

The pharmacy is an integral healthcare service in the local community. The retail and counter functions support the wider pharmacy operation by ensuring that customers have access to appropriate:

  • Over\-the\-counter products

  • Toiletries

  • Personal care items

  • Seasonal lines

  • Promotional offers
You will also receive training to support the sale of OTC products and to understand when customers should be referred to trained pharmacy colleagues for professional advice. You will also be expected to train and brief pharmacy team members on relevant products, product features, customer benefits, promotional offers and merchandising priorities, so that the whole branch team can support responsible retail sales growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage retail merchandising, stock ordering, shelf presentation and promotional displays to support sales growth.

  • Ensure retail shelves are fully stocked, clean, correctly priced and presented to a high standard.

  • Carry out pharmacy counter assistant duties, including serving customers, processing sales, answering basic enquiries and maintaining a professional customer\-facing service.

  • Support the sale of suitable OTC and retail products, while recognising when a customer must be referred to trained pharmacy staff.

  • Train and brief pharmacy team members on retail products, product features, promotional offers and merchandising priorities to improve customer engagement and support sales growth.

  • Move, organise, replenish and rotate stock safely and efficiently, including handling a considerable volume of retail products.

  • Check deliveries, product labels, pricing, quantities, expiry dates and product placement accurately.

  • Review stock levels regularly and order appropriate products to maintain availability while avoiding unnecessary overstock.

  • Support efficient stock turnover by balancing customer demand, profitability and stock\-holding discipline.

  • Plan and implement shop promotions, seasonal displays and pricing updates.

  • Support the Alfreton branch with retail merchandising, stock presentation and counter assistant work, and assist additional branches as the role expands.

  • Travel between branches as required to fulfil the responsibilities of the role.

  • Work with pharmacy colleagues to ensure they understand retail priorities and can support retail objectives alongside their pharmacy duties.

  • Handle customer enquiries and complaints professionally, escalating where appropriate.

  • Maintain a clean, organised and commercially attractive retail environment.

  • Provide feedback and practical guidance to colleagues to improve retail awareness, product knowledge, counter service and customer engagement.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, health and safety requirements, and pharmacy operating standards.
Skills and Experience
  • Experience in retail supervision, shop\-floor leadership, pharmacy counter work or a similar hands\-on customer\-facing retail role.

  • Experience or strong interest in cosmetics, toiletries, personal care products, seasonal products, OTC products and consumer trends.

  • Strong merchandising skills, including product display, pricing, stock rotation and promotion planning.

  • Good understanding of stock control, ordering and retail sales performance.

  • Confident customer\-facing manner with the ability to engage customers, identify sales opportunities and provide appropriate counter service.

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of retail and counter standards across more than one branch.

  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks across different locations.

  • Strong attention to numerical and written detail, including prices, product descriptions, pack sizes, quantities, expiry dates and promotional information.

  • Physical ability to carry out regular stock movement, including light to medium lifting, unpacking deliveries, replenishing shelves and maintaining displays safely.

  • Ability to train, brief and influence pharmacy colleagues on product knowledge, promotions and retail selling opportunities, even where their main duties are pharmacy\-based.

  • Strong team\-working skills, with the ability to gain support from pharmacy colleagues whose main duties may be pharmacy\-based.

  • Good administrative skills for managing records, ordering, stock updates and simple reports.

  • Professional phone etiquette and the ability to deal with customer queries appropriately.

  • Full driving licence and access to a car, as travel between branches is required for the role.
