About the role
We are looking for a Procurement Coordinator to take ownership of sourcing and ordering the materials for our projects. You'll be the link between our site teams, our Quantity Surveyor and our suppliers, making sure the right materials arrive on site at the right time, in the right quantities and at the best possible price.
This is a busy, hands\-on role where no two days are the same. It would suit someone who is organised, enjoys negotiating and takes pride in keeping projects running smoothly behind the scenes.
Key responsibilitiesSourcing and purchasing
- Reviewing drawings, specifications and schedules to understand material requirements for each project
- Sourcing building materials, plant, tools and equipment from merchants, manufacturers and specialist suppliers
- Obtaining and comparing quotes, assessing price, quality, lead times and delivery terms
- Raising and placing purchase orders accurately and in line with project budgets
- Sourcing alternative products when items are unavailable, over budget or on long lead times
- Building and maintaining strong working relationships with suppliers and merchants
- Negotiating prices, discounts, trade accounts, and payment terms
- Monitoring supplier performance on price, quality, and reliability
- Building an approved supplier list and keeping supplier details up to date
- Planning material orders around the build programme so materials arrive when needed, without over\-stocking site
- Coordinating delivery dates and times with site managers and suppliers
- Chasing late orders and resolving problems with shortages, damages, incorrect items and returns
- Arranging plant and equipment hire, including off\-hire, to avoid unnecessary costs
- Working closely with the Quantity Surveyor to keep material costs within budget
- Checking supplier invoices against purchase orders and delivery notes, and resolving discrepancies
- Keeping accurate purchasing records, order logs and cost tracking for each project
- Identifying cost\-saving opportunities, such as bulk buying or alternative products
- Reporting on material spend, outstanding orders and supplier issues
- Experience in procurement, purchasing or buying
- Good working knowledge of building materials, or a strong willingness to learn quickly
- Strong negotiation skills and confidence dealing with suppliers
- Highly organised, with excellent attention to detail
- Able to manage multiple projects, orders and deadlines at once
- Clear and professional communication, both written and verbal
- Competent with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Previous experience with a building contractor, builders' merchant or in the construction industry
- Proactive and able to anticipate problems before they affect site
- Calm and solutions\-focused under pressure
- Reliable, flexible and a strong team player
- Commercially aware, with an eye for value
