Job description

Job responsibilities

Accurately dispensing of prescriptions and admin duties relating to this.

Maintaining confidentiality at all times.

Ensuring enquiries from patients are efficiently and courteously handled.

Working within Health \& Safety guidelines.

Adhere to Safeguarding policy \& be aware of individual responsibility.

Confidentiality Policy:

Staff must not under any circumstances disclose patient information to anyone outside the Practice, except to other health professionals who have a requirement to know patient details as part of their role. Or where the patient has provided a specific written consent.

Disclosure to other staff or professionals will usually be restricted to those who themselves operate under a duty of confidentiality, either contractual (employees) or under a professional code of conduct (GPs etc).

Dispensers must be familiar with Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) and in particular the requirement and recommendation to clearly identify patients, their representatives (family etc)

or health care professionals attending on behalf of the patient whilst acting in their professional capacity. SoPs recommend the circumstances under which identification may be requested.

All patients can expect that their personal information will not be disclosed without their permission (except in the most exceptional circumstances when disclosure is required when somebody is at grave risk of serious harm). Care must be taken when someone other than the patient attends to deal with prescriptions.

Disclosure of information to the parent or guardian of a young person of adolescent age should not normally take place without the young persons consent.

Prior to giving advice on prescription medicines Dispensers should establish whether the person collecting or handing in the item is the patient or is a third party. It is normally appropriate to provide advice on the method of administration of a product however if in doubt the matter should be referred to a GP.

Where a product is being collected by a third party care should be taken to ensure that additional information is not given in breach of confidence (e.g. answering casual questions or providing information which may indicate the nature of a patients illness or condition).

Staff who suspect a breach of confidentiality must inform the Practice Managerimmediately and complete a Significant Event record. Any deliberate breach of confidentiality will be considered as a serious disciplinary offence and may lead to dismissal.

Staff remain bound by the requirement to keep information confidential even if they are no longer employed at the Practice.

Dispensary staff will ensure that all records, prescription items and other patient identifiable documents are stored in a manner which prevents casual customers from viewing them by accident or intent.

Dispensary staff will ensure that where a patient has been

invited to undergo a Medication Use Review then this will take place in a private room used for that purpose. Where conversations develop publicly into confidential issues the dispenser should, where possible, terminate the conversation and offer private facilities or rearrange the review to a more suitable time.

Disclosure of information without patient consent is possible in a number of instances, and where circumstances arise, the decision whether to disclose information or not would normally be taken by the pharmacist or by a GP. Examples may be where a patient appears to be incapable of giving consent due to age or condition, where disclosure may be in the patients best interests, or where required to do so by a properly authorised public body (police, coroner etc).
