Hertford, Hertfordshire
Starting at £16\.00 per hour
Full\-time and part\-time positions available
1 full\-time \+ 2 part\-time positions
(Lead position up to £20 per hour depending on experience)

We are looking to build a small team of Personal Assistants / Support Workers around an 18\-year\-old young man with cerebral palsy, autism, additional learning and communication needs and dystonia.

He is a full\-time wheelchair user and requires support with personal care and his physical needs, but this role is about much more than providing care.

Our aim is to help him build a full and enjoyable adult life with greater independence, regular activities, new experiences and a routine outside the family home.

We are looking for one full\-time PA and two part\-time PAs. For the right person, the full\-time position could develop into a Lead Personal Assistant role with greater responsibility for coordinating his weekly routine, activities and wider support team.

What the role involves

You'll support him with his everyday life, including:

  • Personal care, dressing, toileting and daily routines

  • Transfers, hoisting, positioning and physical support

  • Getting out of the house and accessing activities and the community

  • Driving his wheelchair\-accessible vehicle

  • Swimming, days out, shopping and other regular activities

  • Developing independence and everyday life skills

  • Supporting appointments and therapy programmes where appropriate

  • Helping with food choices, shopping and preparing meals

  • Finding new hobbies, activities and experiences

  • Helping him build a varied weekly routine while respecting when he wants his own space
There's also a big social side to the role.

He's 18 and enjoys films, gaming and technology. Sometimes the best use of a couple of hours might be playing PlayStation together, helping him discover a new PC game, showing him something new on his laptop or finding a piece of technology he can use more independently.

We'd therefore particularly welcome applications from people who are comfortable with computers, gaming and technology and could use those interests to engage with him.

You don't have to come from a traditional care background

Experience in care, physical disability or SEN would be valuable, particularly for the full\-time role, but it isn't essential for every member of the team.

We'd also be very interested in hearing from people such as SEN teaching assistants/LSAs, university students, recent graduates, therapy or healthcare students, or people with an interest in gaming and technology who think they would connect well with a young adult.

Training can be provided around his individual physical and personal\-care needs.

What matters enormously to us is finding people who are reliable, kind, confident, proactive and genuinely interested in spending time with him.

We don't want somebody simply sitting in the room supervising him. We want people who will help him have his own life.

Full\-time / Lead PA opportunity

For someone with more experience, we're also looking for a person who could potentially make this their main role.

Alongside providing direct support, the Lead PA could take greater responsibility for organising his week, researching and arranging activities, attending appointments, communicating with other PAs and helping us continually develop his independence.

Previous experience with cerebral palsy, physical disability, complex needs, SEN or a similar support role would be particularly valuable for this position.

Hours

We are recruiting:

1 × full\-time PA
2 × part\-time PAs

There is flexibility around the exact working pattern for the right people, although we're particularly interested in applicants who can commit to consistent days/hours each week.

Pay: £16\.00 per hour
For the right person in a lead role this will have added responsibility and pay up to £20 per hour.

A full UK driving licence is essential as the role will involve driving his wheelchair\-accessible vehicle.

An enhanced DBS check and appropriate references will be required.

When applying, please tell us whether you're interested in the full\-time or part\-time position, how many hours you're looking for, your regular availability, where you'll be travelling from and a little about why you think you'd be a good fit.

Pay: From £16\.00 per hour

Expected hours: 5\.0 – 40\.0 per week

Benefits:

  • Flexible schedule
Work Location: In person
