Out of Hours Registered Veterinary Nurse
Make a difference when patients need you most.
We’re looking for a caring, motivated Registered Veterinary Nurse to join our out of hours team at The Hampshire Vet. This is an opportunity to put your nursing skills at the heart of overnight inpatient and emergency care in an independent small animal practice.
Founded by vets Emily and Jamie , The Hampshire Vet was built around a commitment to exceptional inpatient care, evidence\-based veterinary medicine and excellent client communication. We provide 24\-hour care with an onsite veterinary team, helping patients receive continuity of care in familiar surroundings.
Why join us?
Overnight care is central to what we do—not an add\-on. Our founders’ experience in veterinary hospitals shaped a practice where unwell patients can continue receiving care onsite, supported by a team that values collaboration and high clinical standards.
You’ll work in a well\-equipped practice with:
· Separate cat and dog wards and a separate isolation ward.
· Three operating theatres
· Digital X\-ray and ultrasound.
· Comprehensive onsite laboratory.
· Separate dental suite.
We’re also proud to have received the New Business of the Year Award at the Basingstoke Inspire Business Awards 2024 and the Wellbeing Champion Award in 2025 and are finalists for the Small Business category for 2026\.
The role
Working alongside our onsite night vet, you’ll help deliver attentive nursing care to hospitalised patients and support the assessment and treatment of emergency cases. Our 24\-hour service means overnight nursing forms an important part of the care we provide.
Your responsibilities will include:
· Monitoring inpatients, recognising changes in their condition and escalating concerns promptly.
· Delivering nursing care and prescribed treatments tailored to each patient.
· Supporting emergency procedures, anaesthesia and patient recovery.
· Maintaining accurate clinical records and clear handovers between night and day teams.
· Communicating with owners compassionately and professionally.
· Maintaining a clean, organised clinical environment and high infection\-control standards.
We’re looking for an RCVS\-registered veterinary nurse who takes pride in thoughtful patient care, communicates clearly and works well within a team. RCVS registration is a requirement of the role.
Confidence in inpatient nursing, a calm approach to changing priorities and an interest in emergency and critical care will help you make the most of this position.
What we offer
· Salary of £18,000–£35,600 per annum, depending on agreed annual working hours
· Holiday entitlements incoporated into contracted hours and hourly rate of pay.
· An annualised rota of 830\-1612 working hours per year on a pre\-agreed repeatable 4 rota. Equating to 4\-8 shifts per 4 week rota, dependent on candidates preference.
· Paid annual RCVS and VDS subscription.
· CPD support of up to £1,000 and 1\.5 working days per year, pro rata where applicable and subject to approval.
· Employer\-funded training required for your core duties, separate from your CPD allowance.
· Access to private medical insurance, staff discount scheme and bonus scheme (upon completion of probation period).
· Workplace pension, subject to eligibility.
Our night operating hours are 6\.30pm–8\.30am, with shifts allocated by rota across the week, including weekends.
In addition to your agreed annual hours, you will be required to work two bank holiday day shifts and two bank holiday night shifts each year—four shifts in total.
