Multi-Skilled Field Service Engineer

Role Overview

MediService is seeking a practical, experienced and versatile Multi\-Skilled Field Service Engineer to support the maintenance, repair and ongoing reliability of our growing portfolio of mobile, relocatable and modular healthcare infrastructure.The role is deliberately broad and is intended for an engineer with strong electromechanical fault\-finding skills who is comfortable working across a range of plant, electrical and mechanical systems rather than specialising in a single discipline.The successful candidate will support the infrastructure surrounding our clinical and diagnostic equipment, including generators, HVAC systems, chillers, electrical distribution, pumps, water systems, mobile and relocatable unit infrastructure, environmental controls and associated ancillary equipment.This is not primarily a CT or MRI engineering position. Specialist medical imaging equipment will continue to be supported by appropriately trained imaging engineers and OEMs. However, the postholder will work closely with those engineers and will play a key role in diagnosing and resolving the infrastructure faults that can affect scanner availability and clinical operations.

Key ResponsibilitiesPlanned Maintenance and Servicing

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance across MediService\-supported infrastructure.


• Undertake routine generator servicing, inspections and functional testing.


• Inspect and maintain HVAC, cooling and chilled\-water systems.


• Maintain pumps, tanks, valves, pipework and associated water and waste systems.


• Inspect electrical distribution systems, connections, isolators, breakers and associated components.


• Undertake routine servicing of ancillary systems within mobile, relocatable and modular healthcare units.


• Complete pre\-deployment and post\-deployment technical inspections.


• Identify developing faults before they result in equipment downtime.


• Maintain accurate service records and preventative maintenance schedules.

Breakdown and Fault Diagnosis

• Attend engineering breakdowns across TIC and MediService\-supported sites.


• Carry out systematic mechanical and electrical fault finding.


• Diagnose generator, HVAC, chiller, pump, electrical and control\-system faults.


• Identify whether faults originate from infrastructure, the clinical equipment or another external service.


• Repair faults directly where appropriately trained, competent and authorised.


• Escalate faults to specialist engineers or subcontractors where required.


• Support rapid restoration of clinical services following infrastructure failures.

Generators and Critical Power

• Perform planned generator servicing and inspections.


• Diagnose generator starting, charging, fuel, control and electrical faults.


• Inspect batteries, starter systems, alternators and associated controls.


• Support testing of automatic transfer and backup\-power arrangements.


• Maintain associated fuel systems, fuel monitoring and ancillary components.


• Support the development of preventative maintenance arrangements for generator fleets.

HVAC and Cooling Systems

• Undertake first\-line diagnosis of air\-conditioning and cooling\-system faults.


• Support maintenance of split, packaged and specialist cooling systems.


• Diagnose chilled\-water system faults including pumps, sensors, flow issues and control problems.


• Support chiller maintenance and servicing within the engineer's competence.


• Coordinate specialist refrigeration or F\-Gas engineers where required.


• Monitor environmental conditions required for medical imaging and clinical equipment.

Mobile, Relocatable and Modular Units

• Maintain mechanical and electrical systems associated with mobile and relocatable healthcare units.


• Support fault finding involving doors, access systems, ramps, hydraulic systems and levelling equipment.


• Maintain water, waste and tank systems.


• Support lighting, power, distribution and ancillary electrical systems.


• Assist with mobilisation, installation, commissioning and decommissioning of units.


• Support technical inspections before units move between locations.


• Assist with the integration of new technologies and engineering improvements across the fleet.

Monitoring and Control Systems

• Support environmental monitoring systems including temperature and humidity monitoring.


• Investigate power\-status and equipment alarms.


• Support telemetry and remote monitoring systems.


• Assist with fault diagnosis involving sensors and basic control systems.


• Help develop remote engineering monitoring across the MediService fleet.

Engineering Documentation

• Complete clear and accurate engineering service reports.


• Record faults, investigations, repairs, parts and recommendations.


• Maintain asset maintenance histories.


• Identify recurring faults and recommend preventative action.


• Support the creation and improvement of engineering procedures, checklists and service schedules.


• Maintain appropriate technical documentation for customer and internal equipment.

Customer and Operational Support

• Represent MediService professionally when attending internal and external customer sites.


• Communicate clearly with clinical teams, operations staff and customers regarding faults and expected actions.


• Coordinate specialist subcontractors where additional expertise is required.


• Support third\-party service contracts delivered by MediService.


• Assist the wider engineering team where operational priorities require support.


• Participate in an appropriate engineering call\-out arrangement where required.

Candidate Profile

We are particularly interested in engineers who have developed broad practical engineering skills within field\-service environments.Relevant backgrounds may include:

• HVAC and refrigeration


• Electrical and mechanical field service


• Data\-centre or critical\-infrastructure engineering


• Marine engineering


• Military / REME\-style engineering


• Equipment rental and plant\-hire engineering


• Mobile medical or healthcare engineering

Experience working specifically within healthcare is advantageous but is not essential.We place greater importance on practical engineering ability, fault\-finding capability and attitude than experience with any individual equipment manufacturer.

Essential Skills and Experience

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

• Strong practical mechanical and electrical engineering capability.


• Proven experience diagnosing technical faults in the field.


• Experience maintaining or repairing multiple types of plant or equipment.


• Ability to diagnose faults systematically rather than simply replace components.


• Good understanding of electrical systems and electrical fault finding.


• Ability to read technical manuals, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings.


• Experience with at least several of the following:


• generators;


• HVAC systems;


• chillers;


• pumps;


• electrical distribution;


• control systems;


• hydraulics;


• mobile or modular equipment.


• Ability to work independently and make sensible engineering decisions on site.


• Strong health and safety awareness.


• Good written documentation skills.


• Full UK driving licence.


• Willingness to travel nationally.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

Any of the following would be advantageous:

• 18th Edition electrical qualification.


• Electrical testing or inspection qualifications.


• F\-Gas qualification.


• HVAC or refrigeration qualifications.


• Generator manufacturer or engine training.


• PLC, BMS or controls experience.


• Hydraulic\-system experience.


• Critical\-power or UPS experience.


• Battery energy\-storage experience.


• Experience with telemetry or remote monitoring.


• Experience servicing specialist vehicles or mobile units.


• Experience within healthcare, laboratories, data centres or other critical environments.

Candidates are not expected to hold all of these qualifications.

Competence and SafetyMediService operates within clinical and technically demanding environments. Engineers are expected to recognise the limits of their competence and must not undertake specialist work without appropriate training, authorisation or certification.Where necessary, the engineer will diagnose the likely cause of a fault, make the equipment safe and coordinate the appropriate specialist resource.The ability to determine what is wrong, what can safely be repaired internally, and what requires escalation is a central part of the role.Personal AttributesWe are looking for someone who is:

This position will sit alongside MediService's specialist medical imaging engineers.The broad division of responsibility is:

Multi\-Skilled Field Service Engineer
Generators, electrical infrastructure, HVAC, chillers, pumps, water systems, mobile/relocatable unit systems, environmental controls, monitoring systems and associated infrastructure.

Imaging Field Service Engineers
Specialist CT, MRI and other modality\-specific engineering where appropriate training and competency are required.

Specialist Contractors / OEMs
Work requiring specific statutory certification, manufacturer authorisation or specialist competence beyond the internal engineering team's approved scope.
