Mechanical Design Engineer
About Us:
Byohm (A trading name of Wastewater Fuels Ltd) is a UK\-based clean technology company pioneering next\-generation wastewater treatment and renewable energy systems. Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Coventry, West Midlands, we develop bio\-electrochemical systems (BES) that convert wastewater into treated water and renewable fuels.
Driven by a mission to revolutionise wastewater treatment through low\-energy, sustainable technologies, we aim to recover energy and protect natural resources. Our vision is to create a world where every drop of wastewater contributes to a circular, decarbonised economy, transforming what was once waste into a valuable source of clean energy and environmental resilience.
The Role:
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the CAD development of Byohm’s pilot systems, prototypes, test rigs and engineering assemblies.
This role combines mechanical design, problem\-solving and practical engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to apply sound engineering judgement, understand the practical implications of their work, and turn early\-stage concepts into robust, manufacturable solutions.
As an early\-stage clean technology company, our work often starts from first principles and evolves through operational constraints, testing and feedback. We are looking for someone who is creative, technically confident, comfortable with uncertainty, and able to bring clarity and structure to a fast\-moving engineering environment.
Key responsibilities include:
· Develop 3D CAD models and engineering drawings in Fusion 360 for mechanical parts, assemblies, prototypes, test rigs and pilot systems.
· Translate early\-stage concepts, sketches and operating requirements into practical, manufacturable design solutions.
· Apply engineering judgement around materials, tolerances, fabrication, assembly, sealing, access, maintenance and robustness.
· Support the design and improvement of pilot\-scale wastewater treatment and bio\-electrochemical systems.
· Work with engineers, technicians, suppliers and fabricators to move designs from concept through to build, testing and iteration.
· Maintain organised CAD files, drawings, bills of materials, design records and revision control.
Essential Requirements:
Applicants should have:
· Degree, HNC, HND, apprenticeship or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering or a closely related discipline.
· Strong experience in mechanical design engineering, CAD design or product / equipment development.
· High competence using Fusion 360, including 3D modelling, assemblies and technical drawings.
· Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of how parts are manufactured, assembled, installed and maintained.
· Experience designing components, assemblies, prototypes, test rigs, mechanical systems or process equipment.
· Ability to work from incomplete information and develop practical design options.
· Good communication skills and an organised approach to drawings, revisions and documentation.
· Willingness to work in a dynamic startup environment where priorities may evolve.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
The following would be advantageous:
· Experience in clean technology, wastewater treatment, water treatment, process engineering, R\&D, pilot plants or industrial equipment design.
· Experience designing for fabrication, machining, sheet metal, welding, 3D printing or low\-volume manufacture.
· Experience with tanks, pipework, pumps, valves, frames, enclosures, fluid handling systems or process equipment.
· Experience working with external fabricators, machine shops or manufacturing suppliers.
· Full UK driving licence.
Personal Attributes:
We are looking for someone who is practical, mechanically intuitive, comfortable developing new concepts from scratch, and able to balance speed, engineering judgement and clear communication in a fast\-moving startup environment.
Qualifications:
Degree, HNC, HND, apprenticeship or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Design Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Applicants with substantial relevant mechanical design experience will also be considered where they can demonstrate strong CAD capability, practical engineering judgement and a track record of delivering real\-world designs.
