Job Description

About Us

We are a world\-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.

Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.

We employ 1100 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.

Diversity and inclusion matter to us.

Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.

We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.

About the role

We are looking for a GIS Developer to play a key role in two national partnership programmes that leverage GIS tools for public participation in scientific research, community environmental action and nature recovery. 60% of the role is focused on the well\-established National Education Nature Park www.educationnaturepark.org.uk, enhancing the existing suite of GIS tools and visualisations to increase impact, smooth data collection and more deeply embed GIS within school teaching. 40% of the role is focused on a new programme, Museums for Nature, which will adapt the Nature Park GIS tools for regional museums to use with local community groups and partners to work towards and monitor nature recovery. Both projects deliver on the Museum’s strategic priority Urban Nature Movement – a key route to achieving our mission of creating advocates for the planet.

About you

Are you looking to use your GIS skills to enable real world action on biodiversity loss and climate change? Are you passionate about using geospatial data to inform nature recovery decisions at a national scale? Skilled in developing a broad suite of ArcGIS tools and visualisations, you will bring your technical expertise to these two projects to enhance user journeys, academic outputs and overall impact. You must be keen to share your GIS skills to upskill others, to communicate about GIS with non\-specialist audiences, and to develop GIS\-based tools that are user\-centred, accessible and attractive to public audiences including children and young people.
