General Manager
Overview
The Penny Black is an independent, characterful neighbourhood pub with a strong focus on great drinks, great hospitality and live music.
We're looking for a hands on, hospitality led General Manager to take ownership of the day to day operations of The Penny Black and help take it to its next stage. Someone who genuinely enjoys hospitality.
As general manager, you'll have overall responsibility for the successful operation of The Penny Black, reporting to the director. You'll lead a team of up to 10 people and will have real autonomy across the operation, including staffing, rotas, recruitment, suppliers, stock, budgets, events, promotions and the customer experience.
We're looking for someone who can balance the commercial side of running a pub with what really matters: creating a place where customers want to come back to and staff want to work.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for the day to day operation of The Penny Black
- Lead, motivate and develop a team of up to 10 staff
- Recruit great people and build a strong, reliable team.
- Improve staff training and development.
- Create a positive and professional working environment.
- Deliver consistently high standards of hospitality and customer service.
- Build strong relationships with regular customers and the local community
- Develop and deliver events, live music and promotions
- Identify opportunities to increase sales and customer frequency.
- Take responsibility for driving revenue and achieving commercial targets.
- Manage rotas and staffing levels effectively
- Take full responsibility for stock ordering, suppliers and stock control.
- Manage costs and budgets effectively
- Maintain strong cash and financial controls.
- Ensure licensing, health and safety and operational standards are maintained
- Work closely with the Director to develop the pub and its future direction.
- Lead from the front and be visible and hands on
We're lookiing for an all\-round hospitality professional who is confident taking ownership and making decisions.
You'll ideally have previous experience as a General Manager or Assistant Manager in a busy pub, bar or similar environment.
More importantly you will:
- Love hospitality and genuinely care about the customer experience.
- Be a natural leader who knows how to get the best from people
- Be confident recruiting, training and developing a team.
- Have strong commercial awareness and understand what drives sales
- Be creative and proactive about events and promotions.
- Be organised and comfortable taking responsibility for the whole operation.
- Have excellent communication and people skills
- Be comfortable working independently and making decisions
- Lead by example
- Have a Personal Licence
- Have a genuine interest in creating a great pub rather than simply managing one.
The right person will be someone who can walk into the pub and think 'how can we make this better'
Whether that is improving the team's performance, creating a new event, building relationships with regulars or simply making sure every customer has a great night, you'll have the autonomy to make that happen.
Pay: £34,000\.00\-£36,000\.00 per year
