Salary: £38,000–£48,000 depending on experience

Situated in the heart of Cheddar village, just moments from Cheddar Gorge, The Bath Arms is a successful gastro pub with six boutique adults\-only bedrooms.

We are proud of the reputation we have built for excellent food, warm hospitality and a relaxed but professional atmosphere. Our kitchen is multi award winning, with a focus on quality seasonal food, friendly service and consistently high standards.

This is a rare opportunity: we have recruited for a General Manager only once in the last 12 years.

We aren’t looking for someone to come in and reinvent The Bath Arms. We are looking for an experienced, confident and dependable hospitality manager who can take ownership of the day\-to\-day operation, look after an established team and maintain the standards and culture that have made the business successful. There are 2 very strong deputy general managers, and this team structure ensures we always deliver on our promise of Seriously Good Food at a fair price since 2014\.

The Role

As General Manager, you will ensure our high standards of food, drink, customer service and accommodation are met daily through a hands\-on approach.

You’ll be a visible presence in the business, leading the front\-of\-house team and making sure service runs smoothly, particularly during our busiest periods.

You’ll have the confidence and experience to make decisions, deal calmly with the unexpected and take responsibility for the venue, while working closely with our Head Chef, Owners and wider SGF Group team.

The role includes:

• Leading the day\-to\-day operation of the pub, restaurant, terrace and six guest bedrooms.


• Managing, supporting and developing the front\-of\-house team.


• Maintaining consistently high standards of service and guest experience.


• Working closely with the Head Chef to ensure the kitchen and front of house work effectively together.


• Managing rotas and staffing levels effectively in line with the needs of the business.


• Taking ownership of labour, stock control and key operating performance, supported by the wider SGF Group.


• Maintaining high standards of licensing, health \& safety, food hygiene and general compliance.


• Handling guest feedback and operational issues confidently and professionally.


• Protecting the positive, supportive team culture that is important to us.

You might already be a General Manager looking for a long\-term position in an established independent business, or an experienced Deputy/Assistant General Manager who is ready to take overall responsibility for a venue.

More important to us than an impressive list of buzzwords is finding someone who is:

Experienced and capable – you know how a good hospitality operation should run and don’t need to be micromanaged.

Calm and confident – able to make sensible decisions and deal calmly and pragmatically with problems.

Hands\-on and visible – you lead from the front, are present on the floor and set the standard for the team through the way you operate every day.

Good with people – approachable and fair, while still being confident managing performance and maintaining standards.

Commercially aware – you understand labour, stock, margins and the importance of running an efficient operation.

Consistent – you understand that excellent hospitality is often about getting the fundamentals right, day after day.

Looking for something long term – we’d particularly like to hear from someone who wants to become part of an established business and team rather than simply use the role as their next stepping stone.

Experience within a quality food\-led pub, independent restaurant or small hotel would be particularly relevant.
