The Opportunity

This is a front\-line, varied, hands\-on role that sits at the heart of our operation. The BNR Financial Accountant is the key finance professional in the business, responsible for the integrity of financial reporting, management of the finance function, and providing the commercial insight the MD and leadership team need to make sound decisions. The successful candidate is expected to understand how the business works, not just what the numbers say — industry and commercial awareness is a key quality we value.

Just as important as technical ability is how you work with people. We're looking for a hands\-on, commercially minded accountant with strong interpersonal and team\-building qualities — someone who can lead and develop a small finance team, and build genuine working relationships with colleagues across Sales, Purchasing and Operations.

A critical part of this role is driving the adoption and effective use of modern tools — including ERP systems, Excel, Power BI, and AI\-assisted workflows — to improve the speed, accuracy, and usefulness of financial information across the business. The company is growing and in a systems transition phase and we need a candidate that can work with and through this and bring to completion. Experience in this position is the key factor.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and develop the accounting team, ensuring open communication and strong working relationships with Sales, Purchasing and the wider operation.


• Produce accurate, timely monthly management accounts with full P\&L, balance sheet, and cash flow.


• Manage the month\-end and year\-end close process, ensuring all entries are complete and reconciled.


• Analyse gross margin by product line, customer, or territory to support commercial decision\-making.


• Monitor stock levels and working capital efficiency in partnership with Operations and Purchasing.


• Manage taxation, VAT returns, and statutory compliance obligations.


• Liaise with external accountants and auditors for year\-end accounts and audit processes.


• Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in partnership with the MD and leadership team.


• Produce monthly and yearly variance analysis with clear commentary.


• Build rolling forecasts that give the business a forward view of revenue, margin, and cash.


• Model financial scenarios to support strategic decisions such as new market entry, capital investment, or pricing changes.


• Own and optimise the ERP system, ensuring master data is clean, processes are followed, and the system generates accurate financial output.


• Build and maintain Power BI dashboards that give the MD and leadership team real\-time visibility of key financial and operational KPIs.


• Use Excel at an advanced level for financial modelling, analysis, reconciliations, and reporting templates.


• Champion digital finance practices across the team, training others where needed.


• Understand the operational drivers of cost and margin, working closely with Operations, Purchasing and Sales to identify and act on financial risks and opportunities.


• Support contract and pricing decisions by providing clear financial analysis of proposed terms and margins.


• Monitor and report on KPIs that link operational performance to financial outcomes.


• Provide financial input to supplier negotiations, lease agreements, and capital expenditure proposals.


• Manage and develop the finance team (AR, AP, and any finance assistants), setting clear expectations and supporting their growth.


• Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls, ensuring the business is protected against error and fraud.


• Document key finance processes and ensure they are followed consistently.


• Ensure the business is compliant with all relevant financial regulations and filing deadlines.

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) — or qualified by experience, with a demonstrable track record and ready for the next step.


• Minimum 3–5 years' experience as a Senior/Qualified Accountant, Finance Manager, or equivalent role, with the readiness and ambition to take on a senior, business\-facing finance position.


• Proven experience in an SME environment — comfortable working with management and the leadership team, with direct board\-level exposure.


• Track record of producing accurate monthly management accounts to tight deadlines.


• Hands\-on experience with at least one ERP system at a technical level (not just as a user).


• Advanced\-level Excel skills — able to build and maintain complex financial models independently.


• Experience building or maintaining Power BI reports or an equivalent BI tool.


• Strong understanding of statutory compliance in the relevant jurisdiction. ROI, NI and UK in conjunction with external auditors and support partners.


• Experience managing and developing a small finance team, with strong interpersonal skills.


• Experience working across multiple territories incorporating FX transactions.


• Experience with customs import/export processes.

• Exposure to ERP implementation or migration projects — experience with Intact/GenetIQ.


• Experience in a product distribution, manufacturing, or wholesale SME environment.


• Familiarity with AI tools applied to finance workflows.

• A natural team builder — able to lead, motivate and develop a small finance team, and build strong, collaborative relationships across the business.


• Commercially minded — sees numbers as a tool to improve the business, not just a compliance obligation.


• Operationally curious — takes the time to understand how the business works and what drives its costs and margins.
