About us

We're Tectum Holdings Ltd, a small, established group of companies operating predominantly within the care sector, and we're looking for an experienced Finance Officer to take ownership of the daily finance function across the group \- from hands on bookkeeping, ledgers and reconciliations through to the commercial analysis that sits behind the numbers.

You'll see this role listed under Marian House Nursing Home, one of the companies within our group and where the role is based, but you'll be joining Tectum Holdings Ltd's central head office finance team, supporting Marian House and the other companies across the group. Here is a link to the website www.tectumholdings.com

This is a genuinely hands on role: you'll be doing the bookkeeping, payroll, VAT and month\-end work yourself, not just reviewing it. But we also want someone who understands what the figures mean commercially and can help us control costs, improve income and margins, and make better financial decisions. You'll work closely with our Managing Director and a small, friendly head office finance team, with genuine visibility across the group.

We're looking to make a long term appointment, so we're especially keen to hear from candidates whose career history shows they like to stick around and build something lasting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate accounting records for several group companies, including purchase, sales and nominal ledgers.

  • Complete bank, balance sheet, payroll control and intercompany reconciliations.

  • Take the accounts through month end, including journals, accruals and prepayments.

  • Prepare monthly financial information and analyse actual performance against budgets and prior periods.

  • Investigate material variances, unusual expenditure and financial discrepancies and recommend appropriate action.

  • Maintain and reconcile care fee records, ensuring correct rates are invoiced and missing or incorrect payments are identified.

  • Prepare and submit VAT returns where applicable.

  • Run weekly and/or monthly payrolls for different group companies, including PAYE, NI, pensions, statutory payments and HMRC submissions.

  • Monitor payroll and staffing costs and highlight significant or unusual movements.

  • Prepare year end schedules and information for external accountants.

  • Support cash flow forecasting and working capital monitoring.
Commercial Responsibilities
  • Review costs and identify practical opportunities to reduce unnecessary expenditure and improve value for money.

  • Analyse income, margins and business performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability.

  • Use financial information to contribute to commercial and operational decisions.

  • Provide management with clear recommendations on expenditure, staffing costs, suppliers, budgets and other business decisions.

  • Challenge costs and assumptions constructively and help evaluate the financial impact of alternative options.

  • Identify financial risks and opportunities early and communicate them clearly to senior management.
What We Are Looking For
  • At least five years' practical bookkeeping/accounts experience.

  • Strong hands on experience through to month end.

  • Commercial decision making experience. You can point to a time your financial analysis or judgement helped reduce costs, improve income or protect profitability.

  • Strong Sage accounting experience.

  • Practical payroll experience.

  • Experience preparing and submitting VAT returns.

  • Good knowledge of reconciliations, accruals, prepayments and journals.

  • Experience analysing actual results against budgets and investigating variances.

  • Good Excel and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work independently, take ownership and manage priorities across several companies.

  • Confidence to challenge expenditure and make practical recommendations to management.

  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A stable employment history \- we're specifically looking for someone who wants to build a long term career with us, rather than move on after a short stint.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications

AAT or another accounting qualification is desirable, although strong practical and commercial experience is more important. Experience within care homes, supported living, domiciliary care or another care sector environment, multi company accounts, supplier negotiation or cost reduction work would be particularly useful.
