Berkshire Lowland Search \& Rescue (BLSAR)
Location: Predominantly home\-based, with occasional meetings in Berkshire
Hours: Flexible – approximately 5\+ hours per week
Status: Ongoing volunteer role
*Use your finance skills to support a lifesaving local charity*
Berkshire Lowland Search \& Rescue (BLSAR) is a volunteer\-run emergency service that supports the police and other emergency services in searching for high\-risk vulnerable missing people across Berkshire and surrounding areas.
Our team of around 80 volunteers gives its time freely, but keeping a Search \& Rescue team trained, equipped and ready to respond requires strong financial management behind the scenes.
We’re looking for an experienced Finance Lead to help us manage our finances effectively and ensure BLSAR has the financial information, controls and processes needed to support our ongoing operations and future plans.
The Role
As Finance Lead, you’ll take responsibility for the day\-to\-day oversight of BLSAR’s finances, working closely with our Leadership Team, Trustees and wider Business Support Team.
You’ll help ensure our financial records are accurate and up to date, provide clear financial reporting and support the organisation with budgeting, forecasting and financial decision\-making.
This is an opportunity to use your professional experience in a role where your contribution will have a very tangible impact.
What You’ll Be Doing
Depending on experience, your responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing BLSAR’s day\-to\-day financial management and records
- Preparing regular financial reports for the Leadership Team and Trustees
- Supporting annual budgeting and financial forecasting
- Monitoring income, expenditure and cash flow
- Maintaining appropriate financial controls and processes
- Supporting the preparation of annual accounts and relevant charity reporting
- Working with Trustees and external accountants or advisers where required
- Supporting fundraising colleagues with financial information for grants and funding applications
- Helping ensure restricted funds and donations are appropriately recorded and monitored
- Providing financial insight to support decisions about equipment, vehicles, training and other operational expenditure
- Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes and reporting
We’re looking for someone with a good understanding of finance, accounting or financial management who would like to use their experience to support a worthwhile local cause.
You’ll ideally have:
- Previous experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping or financial management
- Strong numerical and analytical skills
- Confidence working with budgets and financial reports
- Good attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organisation and time\-management skills
- Confidence using spreadsheets and financial systems
- The ability to explain financial information clearly to people without a finance background
- A collaborative and practical approach
- High levels of integrity and discretion
A formal accounting qualification would be advantageous but we’re equally interested in candidates who can demonstrate strong relevant experience.
What You’ll Get in return
This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to a local charity while using and developing your professional skills.
You’ll have the flexibility to volunteer around your existing commitments and work alongside people from a wide range of professional and operational backgrounds.
You'll also gain insight into the running of a volunteer Search \& Rescue organisation and have the opportunity to influence how we manage and plan our financial resources.
Most importantly, good financial management helps ensure our volunteers have the training, vehicles, equipment and resources they need to respond when someone vulnerable goes missing.
Working Pattern
The role is predominantly home\-based and flexible, with an anticipated commitment of around 5\+ hours per week.
There will be occasional meetings with members of the Leadership Team, Trustees and wider BLSAR team, which may be held virtually or in person within Berkshire.
