Quantum Scholars are looking for experienced and confident English Tutors to provide personalised one\-to\-one support to young people with SEND/SEMH needs.

A key requirement for this role is experience supporting young people who can display challenging behaviour and may struggle with emotional regulation, engagement or traditional learning environments. We are looking for tutors who are confident managing challenging situations, establishing clear boundaries and using positive behaviour strategies while continuing to provide high\-quality English tuition.

The successful tutor will understand that building a positive relationship and creating the right environment for learning is just as important as academic progress. You will need to be calm, patient, consistent and resilient, with the ability to adapt your approach depending on the young person’s individual needs and behaviour.

This role would suit a qualified English teacher, experienced English tutor, teaching assistant, behaviour mentor or education professional who has strong English knowledge alongside genuine experience working with young people with SEND/SEMH and challenging behaviour.

The role may involve:

• Delivering one\-to\-one English tuition to secondary\-aged young people.


• Supporting learners with SEND/SEMH needs who may display challenging behaviour.


• Building positive and trusting relationships with young people who may have significant barriers to learning.


• Establishing clear boundaries, routines and expectations.


• Using positive behaviour strategies to encourage engagement and participation.


• Remaining calm and consistent when faced with challenging or unpredictable behaviour.


• Recognising potential triggers and adapting sessions accordingly.


• Using appropriate de\-escalation approaches when required.


• Planning engaging and accessible English sessions tailored to individual needs.


• Adapting teaching methods, resources and pace according to the learner.


• Identifying gaps in English knowledge and providing targeted support.


• Supporting areas such as reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and communication.


• Developing literacy skills and helping learners become more confident with written and verbal communication.


• Supporting GCSE English preparation and assessment where appropriate.


• Helping learners re\-engage with education following periods of disengagement or difficult behaviour.


• Supporting emotional regulation and developing positive approaches to learning.


• Encouraging confidence, resilience and independence.


• Monitoring progress and providing feedback to parents/carers and relevant professionals.


• Working collaboratively with families, schools and other members of the support team.


• Maintaining professional boundaries and following safeguarding procedures.

Essential requirements:

• Strong English subject knowledge, with the ability to support secondary\-aged learners.


• Experience working with children or young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.


• Significant experience supporting young people who display challenging behaviour.


• Experience delivering one\-to\-one tuition, mentoring or educational support.


• Confidence managing challenging, distressed or unpredictable behaviour appropriately.


• Understanding of positive behaviour support and de\-escalation strategies.


• A calm, patient, consistent and empathetic approach.


• Ability to build trusting relationships with young people.


• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to individual learning, emotional and behavioural needs.


• Strong communication and organisational skills.


• Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries.


• Flexible and resilient approach to working with learners who may experience significant barriers to education.


• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.


• Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
