Overview

The Depot Engineering Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient delivery of all engineering activities at Assenta Rail's Hamilton depot. The role leads a small team of engineers and technicians, ensuring rolling stock maintenance, overhaul, and refurbishment work is carried out to the required quality, technical, and regulatory standards, on time and within budget. The post\-holder acts as the engineering authority on site, supporting the Depot Manager and working closely with wider fleet engineering, quality, and operations functions.

Key Responsibilities

*Engineering Delivery*

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee day\-to\-day engineering and maintenance activities at the Hamilton depot, including overhaul, refurbishment, and fault rectification work.

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with approved work instructions, technical specifications, and applicable engineering standards.

  • Act as the depot's technical point of contact for engineering queries, escalating complex issues to senior fleet engineering as required.

  • Review and approve technical documentation, including work instructions, inspection records, and modification records.

  • Support root cause investigation of engineering faults and non\-conformances, implementing corrective actions.
*Safety, Quality \& Compliance*
  • Ensure all engineering activity complies with relevant railway safety legislation, company safety management systems, and quality procedures.

  • Promote a strong safety culture on the depot, conducting safety briefings, audits, and inspections as required.

  • Ensure certification, testing, and quality documentation is completed and maintained to support vehicle release to service.

  • Identify and manage engineering risk, escalating safety\-critical issues without delay.
*People Management*
  • Lead, supervise, and develop the depot's engineering team, including allocation of work, performance management, and training needs.

  • Ensure the team is appropriately trained, competent, and authorised for the tasks they undertake.
*Planning, Cost \& Reporting*
  • Support the Depot Manager in planning engineering workload, labour, and materials to meet project and maintenance schedules.

  • Monitor engineering progress against plan, reporting delays, risks, and resource constraints.

  • Contribute engineering input to costings, pricing, and project documentation as required.

  • Liaise with procurement and suppliers on parts, materials, and sub\-contracted engineering work.
.*Person SpecificationEssential*
  • Recognised engineering qualification (HNC/HND or degree) in a mechanical or electrical discipline, or equivalent demonstrable experience.

  • Proven experience in a rail engineering, maintenance, or depot environment, ideally including rolling stock overhaul or refurbishment.

  • Sound working knowledge of railway engineering standards, safety legislation, and quality/compliance requirements.

  • Experience supervising or managing engineering staff, including planning and allocating work.

  • Strong organisational and problem\-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities under time pressure.

  • Confident communicator, able to liaise effectively across engineering, operations, and management.

  • Competent with engineering documentation and standard office software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Excel).
*Desirable*
  • Experience with heritage or specialist rolling stock fleets.

  • Familiarity with depot maintenance planning systems and asset management principles.

  • Relevant safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH, NEBOSH) or engineering management qualifications.

  • Experience or training as an assessor
*Working Conditions*
  • Based full\-time at the Hamilton depot, with occasional travel to other Assenta Rail sites as required.

  • Depot\-based role involving time on the workshop floor as well as office\-based planning and administrative duties.

  • 5 Day working week
