Consultant Ophthalmologist
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non\-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1\.15 million and a wider population of 2\.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday 9\-5\.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHS GGC) invites applications for a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Glaucoma. This is a permanent consultant post available from August 2026 joining a large, progressive ophthalmology service delivering care across multiple hospital sites.
The provisional job plan includes sessions working at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and New Victoria Hospital. The post includes 1 in 33 consultant on\-call duties for the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.
The post is offered on a 10 PA contract, including DCC, administrative and SPA sessions. Job plan and location of duties may vary over the course of the contract period, in response to service requirements.
Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once CESR is awarded. Non\-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. Up to 2 EPA’s may be available to undertake additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity. Additional Non DCC (up to 2 PA’s in total Inclusive of 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non DCC can be negotiated and agreed between the successful candidate and Management depending on the time required to support professional activities and the needs of the service.
All newly qualified Consultants are initially offered a minimum of 1 Core Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) which includes CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning and management meetings. This will be reviewed within 6 months (or earlier if required) of appointment and revised upwards if additional responsibilities are agreed.
Clinical experience and Skills
Fellowship training or equivalent postgraduate experience in Glaucoma Expertise in the management of glaucoma patients Evidence of leadership skills and service development Research and Audit Evidence of publications and/or presentations specific to Glaucoma are desirable Teaching and Training Experience in delivering formal and informal teaching and training Commitment to Education and workforce development Professional Attributes Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams Strong organisational skills Willingness to work flexibly to support strategic aims of NHS GGC including development of competence based roles for non\-medical staff
