The Opportunity
Absolute Warehouse Services is looking for an experienced, commercially minded and hands\-on Transport Manager to take ownership of our growing Transport operation.
We currently operate a small but growing fleet, incorporating both general transport and dedicated shunting operations. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make the role their own and play a key part in developing the department.
This is a hands\-on position. We need someone prepared to roll their sleeves up, manage the day\-to\-day operation, solve problems independently, control costs and damages, introduce improvements and help grow the transport side of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and manage daily vehicle and driver requirements, ensuring collections and deliveries are completed safely and efficiently.
- Oversee and develop our shunting operations, ensuring effective driver, tractor unit and trailer utilisation while maintaining service levels.
- Manage employed, agency and subcontracted drivers, including holidays, sickness and shift coverage.
- Maintain high standards of transport compliance, including Drivers' Hours, Working Time Directive, vehicle maintenance and associated records.
- Manage servicing, inspections, MOTs, defects, breakdowns and maintenance providers.
- Monitor fleet utilisation, mileage, fuel, waiting time and overall transport costs.
- Take ownership of reducing vehicle and trailer damage and associated costs, investigating recurring issues and implementing practical solutions.
- Manage daily operational challenges, delays and changing customer requirements.
- Work closely with customers, drivers, warehouse teams and suppliers.
- Manage subcontracted transport where required while maintaining commercial control.
- Monitor transport performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, service and profitability.
- Support the continued growth and development of the transport operation.
Experience of implementing or developing transport technology would be highly desirable.
This could include driver and vehicle tracking, driver apps, electronic job allocation, ePODs, vehicle checks, defect reporting, live job coverage, waiting\-time monitoring and transport management systems.
We want someone who can help us use technology to improve visibility, communication, efficiency and customer service — ideally someone who has previously helped implement these systems, rather than simply used them.
Commercial Growth
Although primarily an operational role, we would particularly welcome someone with a commercial mindset and existing relationships within the transport and logistics industry.
An existing network or diary of customers that could potentially generate additional transport opportunities would be a significant advantage.
For the right candidate, a bonus or commission structure linked to profitable new transport business introduced could be available.
About You
Ideally, you will have:
- Previous Transport Manager or senior transport operations experience.
- Transport Manager CPC qualification.
- Previous experience running or managing a shunting operation would be highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of UK transport legislation and compliance.
- Experience managing drivers, HGVs and trailers.
- Strong transport planning and problem\-solving skills.
- Good commercial awareness and understanding of transport costs.
- Experience reducing vehicle/trailer damage and operational costs.
- Experience introducing transport software or technology.
- Confidence dealing with customers, drivers, suppliers and senior management.
- The ability to work independently and take ownership of the operation.
- Category C\+E (Class 1\) licence would be highly desirable.
We want a roll\-your\-sleeves\-up Transport Manager, not someone who wants to manage solely from behind a desk.
You'll be given the freedom to make the role your own, identify problems and implement solutions. Whether it's improving a shunting operation, reducing damage, improving fleet utilisation, introducing better technology, finding a workaround to an operational problem or identifying new business, we want someone who takes ownership and gets things done.
As the transport operation grows, we want the successful candidate to grow with it and help shape the future of the department.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Permanent, full\-time position.
- Company pension.
- Genuine ownership of a growing transport operation.
- Autonomy to introduce new systems and ways of working.
- Potential new business commission / performance bonus.
- Opportunity to develop the role as the fleet and transport operation grows.
