Transport and Distribution Manager

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Transport and Distribution Manager to oversee and

coordinate transport, fleet and distribution activities within a growing road freight and logistics operation. The role

requires strong knowledge of transport planning, fleet coordination, compliance, cost control and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, manage and coordinate day\-to\-day road freight and distribution operations.


• Organise transport schedules for efficient and timely collection and delivery of goods.


• Allocate vehicles and drivers according to capacity, schedules and customer requirements.


• Plan efficient UK and, where applicable, European freight routes.


• Monitor vehicle movements and respond to delays, breakdowns and operational issues.


• Maximise fleet utilisation and reduce unnecessary downtime and empty mileage.


• Coordinate and supervise drivers, workloads, collection instructions and delivery schedules.


• Maintain appropriate transport and distribution records.


• Support compliance with road transport, vehicle safety and operator\-licensing requirements.


• Monitor drivers' hours, working\-time requirements, vehicle checks, defect reporting and roadworthiness where

applicable.

• Coordinate servicing, inspections, repairs and maintenance and monitor fleet availability.


• Monitor fuel, maintenance, tolls, subcontracting and other transport costs.


• Analyse transport performance and identify route, productivity and cost improvements.


• Liaise with customers regarding collections, deliveries, service issues and operational updates.


• Investigate service failures and complaints and implement corrective measures.


• Coordinate subcontracted carriers and logistics partners and monitor service standards.


• Prepare reports on fleet utilisation, delivery performance, transport costs and service standards.


• Support development and expansion of UK and European freight operations.

Eligibility and Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or equivalent in Transport Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business

Management, Operations Management or a related discipline; or relevant vocational/professional qualifications

with demonstrable transport, logistics, distribution or fleet experience. A Transport Manager CPC would be

advantageous where applicable.

Essential Experience

• Relevant experience in transport, logistics, distribution, haulage or fleet operations.


• Experience planning vehicle movements, delivery schedules, routes and driver allocation.


• Understanding of road freight operations, transport compliance and vehicle safety.


• Ability to manage operational disruptions and monitor transport performance and costs.


• Strong organisational, problem\-solving, communication and reporting skills.

Desirable Experience

• Experience in UK road haulage and commercial fleet management.


• Knowledge of Operator's Licence requirements, drivers' hours and working\-time requirements.


• Experience with telematics/transport management systems, European freight, temperature\-controlled freight or

FORS standards.

• Experience managing subcontracted carriers and improving fleet utilisation.

• Maintain appropriate transport, vehicle and operational compliance standards.


• Improve route planning, customer service, KPI reporting and sustainable freight growth.
