Technician [Signalling Maintenance]
Who We Are
--------------
We are Central route. We are the Heart of Britain's Railway. More than a million people rely on us every week, and we help transport nearly a million tonnes of freight every month. But we are more than just tracks and trains, we are a catalyst for jobs and opportunities, a connection to leisure and time with family and friends, and a foundation for communities and neighbourhoods.
We are a key part of the national network, with Birmingham New Street \- the busiest station outside of London and the hub of the railway \- connecting England, Scotland and Wales, with hundreds of services arriving and leaving every day.
About the role
------------------
Do you enjoy getting hands¿on, solving problems and fixing things when they go wrong?
Do you want a role where your skills directly help keep people safe and the country moving?
Signalling and Telecoms maintenance is an exciting and varied discipline that blends electrical and mechanical engineering in a safety¿critical environment. No two days are ever the same. You could be using advanced electronic testing equipment one day and working hands¿on with mechanical systems that guide trains safely across the network the next. It's a role that keeps you learning, challenged and engaged.
You'll be part of a close¿knit team responsible for inspecting, maintaining and repairing some of the most important systems on the railway. This includes signalling control systems, track circuits, axle counters, point machines, functional power supplies, telecoms infrastructure and other safety¿critical equipment. The work you do will have a direct and visible impact on keeping passengers and freight moving safely and reliably.
As a Technician , you'll take the next step in your career with greater responsibility and influence. Building on your experience as an Operative, you'll support the Team Leader by helping to organise and motivate the team, ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest standards. You'll carry out inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal activities, and may act as Team Leader when required \- giving you valuable leadership experience.
You'll also play a key role in maintaining quality and compliance across the network by accurately recording work, maintaining technical records and checking that assets meet required standards. Your attention to detail and commitment to safety will help protect colleagues, passengers and the wider railway every single day.
This is more than just a job \- it's a chance to build a long¿term, rewarding career in the rail industry. With structured training, recognised competencies and clear progression opportunities, Signalling \& Telecoms offers a future where you can grow your skills, take on more responsibility and make a real difference.
This role requires flexibility, as you'll work a varied shift pattern, but rosters are provided in advance so you can plan your time around family, friends and personal commitments. You'll also be working outdoors throughout the year, so you should be comfortable operating in all weather conditions.
