Support Worker for Supported living

Job Purpose

The Support Worker will provide practical, emotional and person\-centred support to adults living in supported accommodation who may experience mental health difficulties, substance and/or alcohol misuse, homelessness, social isolation and other complex needs.

The role is focused on helping residents maintain their accommodation, develop independent living skills, reduce risks associated with substance misuse and mental health, and make positive progress towards greater independence and stability.

The Support Worker will work collaboratively with residents, colleagues, healthcare professionals, local authorities, drug and alcohol services, mental health services and other relevant agencies.

Key ResponsibilitiesResident Support

• Build positive, professional and respectful relationships with residents.


• Provide one\-to\-one support based on each resident's individual needs, strengths and goals.


• Encourage residents to develop and maintain independent living skills.


• Support residents with daily routines, budgeting, shopping, cooking, cleaning and maintaining their accommodation.


• Encourage residents to attend appointments and engage with appropriate health, mental health, drug and alcohol services.


• Support residents to access education, training, employment, volunteering and community activities where appropriate.


• Promote social inclusion and reduce isolation.


• Encourage residents to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and accommodation.

Mental Health Support

• Provide appropriate emotional and practical support to residents experiencing mental health difficulties.


• Recognise changes in presentation, behaviour or wellbeing and report concerns promptly.


• Support residents to follow agreed wellbeing, recovery or support plans.


• Encourage engagement with GP, community mental health teams and other healthcare professionals where appropriate.


• Follow individual risk management and crisis plans.


• Escalate concerns where there is a significant deterioration in a resident's mental health or an identified risk to themselves or others.

Drug and Alcohol Support

• Provide non\-judgemental, harm\-reduction\-focused support to residents affected by drug and/or alcohol use.


• Encourage residents to engage with specialist drug and alcohol services.


• Support residents to understand the potential risks associated with substance and alcohol use.


• Monitor and report concerns relating to substance use in accordance with organisational policies.


• Follow agreed procedures where there are concerns regarding overdose, intoxication, withdrawal or other substance\-related risks.


• Maintain professional boundaries and avoid enabling behaviours while continuing to provide compassionate support.

Safeguarding and Risk Management

• Promote the safety and welfare of all residents.


• Identify and report safeguarding concerns in accordance with organisational policies and procedures.


• Follow individual risk assessments, support plans and management plans.


• Report incidents, accidents, safeguarding concerns and significant events promptly.


• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents.


• Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow emergency procedures.


• Work within organisational policies relating to safeguarding, lone working, medication, health and safety, confidentiality, substance misuse and incident reporting.

Working Environment

The role is based within supported accommodation/HMO properties and may involve working with residents who have complex and sometimes unpredictable needs.

The post may involve:

• Lone working.


• Evening, weekend and bank holiday shifts.


• Responding to incidents and emergencies.


• Working with residents who may be distressed, intoxicated or experiencing a mental health crisis.


• Working collaboratively with external agencies and professionals.

Appropriate training, supervision, risk assessments and organisational procedures will be provided to support staff in carrying out the role safely.
