Mechanical Engineering Summer Intern

About us

XY Engineering is a precision engineering firm specialising in bespoke workholding, 5\-axis machining, and automation. You'll work alongside experienced engineers on real, live projects — not filing and photocopying.

The role

A hands\-on summer placement for a mechanical engineering student who wants workshop and design experience in equal measure. You'll take parts from concept through CAD to a finished, machined component.

What you'll do

• Produce 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for components and fixtures


• Prepare and run parts on our 3D printers (prototyping and jigs)


• Support CNC machining work: milling, turning, setup, and inspection


• Contribute to design reviews and bring your own ideas to the table

• Currently studying towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar)


• Working knowledge of a 3D CAD package (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or equivalent)


• Genuine interest in manufacturing — you like making things, not just modelling them


• Practical, careful, and keen to learn on the shop floor


• Good communicator who'll ask questions rather than guess

• Any prior 3D printing experience


• Awareness of machining processes and GD\&T


• A personal making/building/tinkering hobby

• Mentoring from working engineers across design and machining


• Exposure to the full cycle: CAD → print → CNC → finished part


• A portfolio of real projects to take into your final year and beyond
