Kirklees Council is seeking an ambitious Strategic Lead for Sport and Physical Activity. This is a high‑impact strategic leadership role, shaping how sport and physical activity contribute to improved health, wellbeing, community cohesion and place‑making across the district.
The role and its strategic impact
Reporting to the Culture \& Visitor Economy service but working across the council with services working towards sport and physical activity outcomes, you will play a central role in turning the Council’s ambitions into practical, place‑based outcomes.
You will lead the district’s sport and physical activity strategy, driving inclusive, preventative programmes that reduce inequalities and improve wellbeing. Working across council priorities—including planning, regeneration, transport and public health—you will embed physical activity into everyday practice and support local growth. You will lead partnerships with Sport England and wider system stakeholders; manage the Council’s relationship with Kirklees Active Leisure to ensure strong governance and value for money; and secure external investment through major bids, business cases and performance frameworks.
About you
You will bring:
- Significant strategic experience in sport, physical activity, health, leisure or a related sector
- A proven track record of developing and delivering complex strategies aligned to corporate priorities
- Experience of working across organisational boundaries and influencing senior leaders, partners and elected members
- Strong funding, investment and financial management expertise
- A clear commitment to inclusion, prevention and reducing inequalities
- Experience of working in a local government context and knowledge of national policy and best practice in sport and physical activity are desirable.
