We are looking for great Support Workers

We are looking for a number of Support Workers to join our team supporting six adults with learning disabilities and autism in a specialist supported living service in Chester.

This is a role for people who want to do more than provide care.

Our approach is focused on independence, choice, communication and quality of life. We use Active Support and Positive Behaviour Support to help the people we support take part in their own lives, develop new skills and have as much control as possible over what they do and how they live.

We are looking for people who understand this approach, or who are genuinely interested in learning about it.

Experience is valuable, but it isn't everything.

If you have experience supporting people with learning disabilities, autism or complex needs, we would love to hear from you.

But we are also interested in people who may be newer to care but have the right values, attitude and drive to become an excellent Support Worker. We can teach you the skills. What is much harder to teach is genuine compassion, patience, curiosity and a belief in what people can achieve.

What will you be doing?

As a Support Worker, you will work alongside the people we support to help them live their lives as independently as possible.

This could include:

  • Supporting people with everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, cleaning and managing their home

  • Supporting people to develop independence and learn new skills

  • Using Active Support to create opportunities for meaningful participation throughout the day

  • Supporting communication and helping people express their choices, wishes and needs

  • Supporting people to access the community, pursue interests and take part in activities they enjoy

  • Supporting personal care where required, always maintaining dignity, privacy and choice

  • Following individual support plans, Positive Behaviour Support plans and risk assessments

  • Supporting people who may experience distress or behaviours that challenge

  • Understanding what might be behind someone's behaviour and responding in a calm and supportive way

  • Supporting people with health needs and attending appointments where required

  • Building positive professional relationships with the people we support

  • Working alongside families, professionals and other members of the support team

  • Recording information accurately and communicating important changes

  • Recognising and reporting safeguarding concerns

  • Contributing to reviews and helping us continually improve the support we provide
What are we looking for?

Most importantly, we are looking for the right people.

You might already have experience in learning disabilities, autism, supported living, residential care or another area of social care.

You might have worked as a Support Worker for years and already understand Active Support and Positive Behaviour Support.

Or you might be completely new to this type of support but know that you want to work with people, make a difference and build a career in social care.

Whichever describes you, we want to hear from people who:

  • Treat people with dignity and respect

  • Are patient and understanding

  • Are genuinely interested in getting to know the person they support

  • Believe people should have choice and control over their own lives

  • Want to support people to do things for themselves rather than taking over

  • Can remain calm when situations become difficult

  • Are willing to learn and take feedback

  • Are confident enough to ask questions when they don't understand something

  • Notice the small things and understand that they can make a big difference

  • Are reliable and understand the importance of consistency for the people we support

  • Can work positively as part of a team

  • Are prepared to think about their own practice and learn from experience
Experience and qualifications

Experience of supporting people with learning disabilities, autism or complex needs would be an advantage, but is not essential.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience of:

  • Learning disabilities

  • Autism

  • Positive Behaviour Support

  • Active Support

  • Supported living

  • Complex communication needs

  • Behaviours that challenge

  • Person centred support
However, we will consider applicants who do not have extensive care experience if they can demonstrate the right values, attitude and potential.

A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care would be desirable, but candidates without a qualification who are willing to work towards one will also be considered.

Full training will be provided.

What does good support look like?

We don't believe good support is about doing everything for someone.

If someone can make their own breakfast, we want to help them make their own breakfast.

If someone wants to go shopping, we want to support them to be involved in planning the trip, making choices and getting there.

If someone communicates differently, we want to understand how they communicate rather than expecting them to communicate in the way that is easiest for us.

And when someone is distressed, we want staff who are prepared to stop and think:

What is this person trying to tell us? What might they need from me right now?

That is the kind of Support Worker we are looking for.

What we offer

  • Very competitive salaries

  • Full time and part time permanent positions

  • Full induction and ongoing training

  • Training and development in Active Support and Positive Behaviour Support

  • Opportunities to work towards relevant Health and Social Care qualifications

  • Regular supervision and support from an experienced management team

  • Opportunities for career development

  • A supportive team environment

  • The opportunity to develop specialist skills and knowledge

  • A role where your ideas, observations and professional judgement are valued
More than a job

Supporting someone with a learning disability or autism can be challenging. It can also be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do.

You might help someone learn to cook their own meal.

You might see someone communicate something for the first time.

You might support someone to try something they have previously found difficult.

You might be part of a team that helps someone become more independent than anyone expected.

Those moments matter.

If you are experienced and want to use your skills in a service that genuinely focuses on independence and quality of life, we want to hear from you.

If you are new to care but have the drive, values and willingness to learn, we want to hear from you too.

We are looking for people who want to become excellent Support Workers, not people who already have a perfect CV.
