An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist specialising in Haematology at Band 6 level to join our team.

The post holder will work closely with the Lead Biomedical Scientist and Senior Biomedical Scientists to provide a 24/7 laboratory service to the Trust and its users.

The department is well equipped with Sysmex XN2000, Sysmex CS2400, Grifols Erytra, Beckman Coulter Navios, Tosoh G8 and Meditech computer system.

The Haematology department is accredited for training with the IBMS.

We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic to join a dedicated team providing a high\-quality service.

The post holder will act as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist working in haematology, coagulation, special haematology and blood transfusion providing scientific services on patient samples as an aid to the clinical diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of paediatric disease.

The Haematology department is part of Laboratory Medicine. The post holder will work as part of a team and with appropriate training will be expected to provide scientific services on patient samples performing a range of diagnostic tests to support the Haematology and Blood Transfusion service.

The post holder will be working 37\.5 hours/week and be required to work out of hours as operationally required.

The post holder is required to have the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology/ Transfusion Practice. Applicants working towards the IBMS Specialist Diploma will be considered without pay progression until complete. Those without, may be considered at Band 5\.

  • To carry out all work to specified standards as laid down by the professional bodies including Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

  • To participate in the routine work of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratory rotating through all sections of the department working without supervision

  • To actively redistribute workload/staff, dependent on demand in each area of the laboratory.

  • To participate in maintaining a system for the safe and confidential storage and retrieval of proper records and specimens both physically and electronically.

  • To approve test procedures using the Meditech computer system. This requires the assessment of multiple factors based upon experience to form a judgement.

  • To highlight urgent and clinically important results.

  • To communicate effectively with colleagues and service users.

  • To deal professionally with telephone enquiries using tact, diplomacy and empathy whilst maintaining strict confidentiality.

  • To operate and maintain expensive and sophisticated equipment on a daily basis to ensure proper and efficient use of equipment and consumables without wastage.

  • To handle hazardous chemicals and reagents appropriately, on a daily basis, according to COSHH regulations.

  • To move and manipulate heavy objects whilst following appropriate manual handling guidelines.
