About GWS

GWS Engineers Ltd is a well\-established, family\-owned engineering company with more than 50 years’ experience.

From our works on the Flixborough Industrial Estate, we manufacture specialist industrial vacuum equipment and operate a large hire fleet supplying customers throughout the UK.

Our equipment has built a strong reputation for quality, performance and reliability, and maintaining those standards is extremely important to us.

We are looking for an experienced, hands\-on engineer with a strong background in diesel engines, mechanical repairs and practical electrical fault\-finding to join our engineering team.

Our hire fleet is predominantly powered by JCB industrial diesel engines. We also operate a smaller number of electrically powered vacuum machines, together with a range of vacuum collection equipment.

Previous experience of industrial vacuum equipment is not required, as full product training will be provided. However, this is not a trainee or junior position. You will need to bring a good level of practical engineering experience and be confident diagnosing faults and working independently.

The role

This is a varied, mainly workshop\-based role within a small and experienced engineering team.

You will service, maintain and repair equipment from our hire fleet, making sure machines are properly inspected, prepared and ready when required by our customers.

As your knowledge of our equipment develops, you will also become an important source of technical support for colleagues, our apprentice engineers and customers.

Your work will include:

  • Servicing, maintaining and repairing industrial vacuum equipment

  • Servicing and fault\-finding on industrial diesel engines and associated systems

  • Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults and carrying out the necessary repairs

  • Working with motors, wiring, switches, sensors and control systems

  • Identifying the underlying cause of equipment problems rather than simply replacing parts

  • Taking responsibility for jobs from initial diagnosis through to completion

  • Working with our Hire Controller to prioritise servicing and repairs so equipment is ready when needed

  • Supporting our apprentice engineers and sharing your practical knowledge with them

  • Providing customers with occasional technical support and fault\-finding advice by telephone

  • Occasionally attending customer sites to investigate faults or provide technical assistance

  • Loading and unloading equipment using forklift trucks

  • Helping with other workshop activities when required, including fabrication, paint spraying and shot blasting
What we are looking for

We are looking for someone with substantial hands\-on experience of servicing, diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and diesel\-powered plant, agricultural, industrial or similar machinery.

You should be comfortable working independently, using a logical approach to fault\-finding and seeing a job through properly from diagnosis to completion.

Essential

  • Substantial hands\-on experience servicing and repairing diesel engines and diesel\-powered machinery

  • Strong mechanical fault\-finding and diagnostic skills

  • Practical electrical knowledge and experience fault\-finding on machinery

  • A logical and methodical approach to solving technical problems

  • The ability to work independently and take responsibility for completing jobs

  • The ability to organise and prioritise your own workload

  • A willingness to support and share your knowledge with apprentice engineers

  • Confidence communicating with customers and explaining technical issues clearly

  • A professional manner when dealing with customers

  • A full UK driving licence

  • A practical and flexible approach to working as part of a small engineering team
Desirable
  • Experience working with JCB diesel engines

  • Experience with construction plant, agricultural machinery, generators, compressors or other heavy equipment

  • A relevant engineering apprenticeship, Level 3 qualification or equivalent practical experience

  • Experience with industrial electrical systems

  • Knowledge of three\-phase motors and electrically powered machinery

  • Forklift truck experience

  • Fabrication and welding experience

  • Paint spraying and shot blasting experience
Salary and benefits
  • £38,500–£40,560 basic salary, depending on experience

  • Regular weekday overtime paid at time and a half

  • Annual company bonus – amount varying depending on company performance

  • Monday–Friday daytime working

  • Workshop based

  • No shift work

  • No routine weekend working

  • 28 days’ paid holiday

  • Annual shutdown between Christmas and New Year

  • Free on\-site parking
