Job Summary
---------------
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 7 Ward Leader position on J46\. The ward specialises in Emergency General Surgery, providing care for acutely unwell patients admitted through assessment and emergency areas. This is a fast\-paced, high\-acuity environment where patients frequently require urgent surgical intervention, rapid investigations, essential treatments, and close monitoring and observation. J46 also plays an important role in supporting effective patient flow through the management of a discharge POD, ensuring patients are transferred or discharged safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic leader who combines compassion with confident and fair leadership. The successful candidate will demonstrate a clear vision for high\-quality patient care, safety, and service improvement while maintaining high standards within the ward environment. Key responsibilities include leading and developing the nursing team, providing strong clinical and managerial leadership, and overseeing the day\-to\-day management of the clinical area, including budget responsibilities. The post holder will support the delivery of quality standards and assurance processes to ensure safe and effective patient care, while acting as a clinical expert and positive role model. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role.

Emergency General Surgery (EGS) is part of the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery Clinical Service Unit (CSU). The ward works closely with the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU), Ambulatory Surgical Clinic (ASC), and the Patient Flow team (PFC) to support the timely admission and discharge of patients.
In addition, the ward maintains strong collaboration with the wider Emergency General Surgery teams, providing excellent opportunities for professional development within the speciality. J46 is a fast\-paced and dynamic environment, offering a challenging yet highly rewarding place to work.
What you will bring to the role

- Support and inspire staff to provide efficient, effective, safe, quality care to patients.
- Deliver a positive patient experience.
- Supervise ward staff with regards clinical practice and patient experience to promote the delivery of excellent clinical standards.
- Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high quality compassionate care as an expert practitioner.
- Through the use of audit, local research, metrics and feedback continually seek to identify practice that needs improvement. Implement and evaluate any resultant improvement plan.
- Maintain and sustain the momentum of improvements until they are firmly embedded into the values and culture of the clinical area.
- Promote a learning and development culture to the improve staff skills, knowledge and competence.
- Promote a positive learning environment within the clinical area to support the development of knowledge and skills in learners.
