Connect to your opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Manager to join Deloitte UK’s market\-leading Trade Compliance team (in London, Birmingham, Bristol or Manchester) with agile and remote working supported. As part of the largest Big 4 Trade Compliance practice in Europe, you will lead complex export controls, sanctions, governance and assurance engagements across diverse industries, build trusted client relationships and help organisations strengthen their risk and compliance capabilities through advisory, process, capability and technology improvements.

Acting as a trusted adviser, you will combine deep trade compliance expertise with commercial acumen to deliver exceptional client value, support strategic growth and help shape the future of clients’ trade compliance programmes. Your responsibilities will include:

Advisory and Solution Development:

  • Anticipate complex client challenges and deliver innovative, enterprise\-level solutions through strategic advice, process optimisation, capability development and technology.

  • Drive significant business growth by translating market trends into thought leadership, new trade compliance services and compelling commercial propositions.

  • Lead complex export classification, licensing, sanctions and controls analysis, including risk assessments, audits and benchmarking against leading practice.

  • Design and implement tailored controls, procedures and digital tools that strengthen compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
Programme Leadership and Delivery:
  • Lead and manage large\-scale, complex, and high\-profile project teams, from strategy through delivery, ensuring quality, client satisfaction and alignment with client and firm objectives.

  • Own engagement performance, including budgets, resources, priorities, risks and clear direction to project teams.
Client, Stakeholder Management and Team Leadership:
  • Cultivate, manage, and influence complex senior stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, acting as a credible and trusted advisor.

  • Build trusted, long\-term relationships with senior stakeholders, including C\-suite executives, identifying opportunities for value creation and communicating appropriately across all levels.

  • Lead, mentor and develop diverse teams, fostering inclusion, accountability, continuous learning, innovation and consistently high standards.
Connect to your skills and professional experience

The ideal candidate will be adaptable, able to assimilate trade compliance risks and issues across diverse industries and develop insights into how these might affect different types of businesses.

You will be comfortable changing direction quickly as industry standards emerge or client priorities shift. You will take a pragmatic approach to trade compliance, centred on a solid understanding of trade compliance risk, governance, and compliance frameworks, enabling you to provide sound advice to clients, help them meet challenges, and manage risks effectively and efficiently.

Essential Skills \& Experience:

Trade Compliance Expertise and Client Advisory:

  • Deep specialist expertise in export controls across complex jurisdictions, including the UK, US, EU and APAC, with the ability to interpret regulatory change and apply it to multinational operations, emerging technologies and complex business models. Export controls must be the candidate’s principal specialism; customs or logistics experience alone is insufficient.

  • Proven ability to advise C\-suite and senior stakeholders on complex regulatory, governance and compliance risks, translating technical issues into pragmatic strategies, controls, processes and technology\-enabled solutions.

  • Strong analytical judgement and problem\-solving skills, with the resilience and adaptability to develop effective recommendations in complex, ambiguous and rapidly changing environments.
Engagement, Commercial and Practice Leadership:
  • Proven experience leading large, complex and high\-profile engagements from strategy through delivery, balancing executive\-level advice with detailed technical oversight while ensuring quality and client satisfaction.

  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, including managing engagement scope, budgets, forecasts, resources, risks and profitability.

  • Demonstrable business development capability, including identifying opportunities, developing compelling propositions and proposals, expanding client relationships and contributing to thought leadership and new services.
People Leadership, Communication and Professionalism:
  • An experienced and inclusive people leader, able to direct, mentor and develop high\-performing, multidisciplinary teams—including managers—while promoting accountability, continuous improvement and consistently high standards.

  • Credible and influential communicator in fluent English, able to build trusted relationships, tailor complex messages for audiences from junior staff to C\-suite executives, and lead presentations, workshops, negotiations and difficult conversations with professionalism and integrity.

  • Proactive and adaptable, with the flexibility to lead global and remote teams, travel to client sites and accommodate demanding project requirements where necessary.
Desirable Attributes:
  • Practical experience designing and implementing trade compliance governance, risk frameworks, controls and processes, including multi\-jurisdictional export control programmes and experience in other key global jurisdictions (e.g., Singapore, Japan, China).

  • Experience applying digital platforms and emerging technologies, including AI, to improve compliance frameworks, operational efficiency and regulatory transformation.

  • A track record of creating and selling new service offerings and leading large\-scale strategic programmes.

  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to key global markets (not essential).
