Duties and Responsibilities
The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) has been mandated by the General Assembly in its resolution 77/301 to clarify the fate and whereabouts of missing persons in Syria and provide adequate support to victims, survivors, and families of those missing. The IIMP’s founding resolution places emphasis on the full and meaningful representation of victims, survivors, and families of missing persons. The Executive Office is seeking an experienced historian and expert on Syria to provide detailed contextual and historical insights to enhance the Institution’s understanding of Syria’s complex historical, political, and societal landscape. The consultant will provide high\-level expert advice focusing on civil society, democratic movements, and media, thereby supporting IIMP’s efforts to adapt its strategies and engagements to the country’s unique historical and socio\-political realities. This expertise will enable the Institution to interpret current events through a historically informed lens, anticipate relevant socio\-political trends, and address cultural and political sensitivities vital for effective communication and stakeholder engagement. The consultant agrees to provide senior\-level expert advice and support, which may include but is not limited to: Provide detailed and nuanced analysis of key historical developments that have shaped contemporary Syria, with particular attention to civil society, democratic movements, and media. Offer expert contextual advice to inform the Institution’s strategic discussions, planning, and decision\-making processes. Contribute to internal consultations and discussions to enhance the team’s understanding of relevant historical and political dynamics. Advise on cultural, political, and historical sensitivities that may impact the Institution’s work and engagement with stakeholders. Analyze and interpret current events within a historically informed framework to support the Institution’s communication and outreach efforts. Respond to ad hoc requests for clarification, historical analysis, or interpretation as required by the Executive Office. Review and provide input on relevant strategic documents, reports, and communication materials to ensure historical and political accuracy and relevance. Collaborate with other experts and stakeholders as appropriate to enrich the Institution’s knowledge base and contextual understanding. Undertake any other advisory tasks within the consultant’s area of expertise as requested by the Head of IIMP.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced degree (Master’s or equivalent) in History, Political Science, Middle Eastern Studies, or a related discipline is required. At least 10 years of experience researching, teaching, and analyzing political, social, and cultural developments in the MENA region, including a minimum of 5 years focused specifically on modern Syrian history, civil society, and regional political dynamics.
Languages
Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
