Core responsibilities: A senior HCA's responsibilities fall into two main areas: direct care and team management. Direct care

  • Specialized and clinical tasks: These can include advanced duties, such as simple wound care, and are also more involved in specialized care, including palliative and end\-of\-life support.

  • Individual care planning: Assist with implementing and evaluating care plans for individual patients or residents.

  • Medication administration: Administer medication according to prescribed schedules and complete accurate medication records.

  • Health monitoring: Take and record physiological measurements and vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperature, and blood glucose.

  • Activities of daily living: Provide compassionate support with personal care tasks like washing, dressing, mobility, and mealtimes.
Team leadership and administration
  • Supervision and guidance: Oversee and guide a team of junior HCAs and new starters on shift.

  • Training and mentorship: Help with the induction and training of new staff members, acting as a role model.

  • Communication: Act as a key point of contact for families and other healthcare professionals. Keep them informed of the patient's progress.

  • Record\-keeping: Ensure that care records and other documentation are clear, accurate, and up\-to\-date.
Key skills and qualificationsTo succeed as a senior HCA, you need a mix of technical ability and interpersonal skills. Qualifications
  • Experience: Previous experience as a healthcare assistant is essential.

  • NVQ Level 3: A Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care is typically required or expected to be attained.

  • Specialized training: Certifications in areas like medication administration and first aid are beneficial.
