Senior Engineering Specialist - Workshop/Test - Turfcare Machinery

Toro U.K. Limited manufacturer of Lawnmowers and Turf Equipment. Established in 1946 as Hayter Limited the company has been actively promoting and distributing Garden and Grounds Care machinery for 80 years.

We currently have an excellent opportunity for a self\-motivated Senior Engineering Specialist to join a busy research and development workshop of a leading manufacturer of Turfcare equipment.

Applicants for the Senior Engineering Specialist role must be competent and knowledgeable in the development and testing of special purpose off\-highway equipment. Such equipment may use both conventional internal combustion and high voltage battery energy sources. Applicants must show an active interest in off highway products, adhesion to safety standards, and a desire to continuously improve.

This role will include fabrication, build and operation of prototype equipment designs, alongside design and build of specialist engineering test stands for conducting procedures to meet needs of both safety and endurance requirements.

You will be proficient in the use of traditional manufacturing methods, such as lathe, mill, saw and weld. Additionally, experience in the rapid prototype technologies of FDM and MSLA printing would be advantageous.

Applicants should have a good working knowledge of mechanical drive systems and structures, especially with regards to internal combustion engines, transmissions, electric motors, belt drives and hydraulic drives and lifting mechanisms.

Any experience of vehicle diagnostics, controller programming and operation of standalone control systems (Raspberry PI, Arduino), would also be advantageous.

Job Purpose:

The successful applicant will work as part of a wider team of design and development engineers and will assist those teams in coordinating prototype build and product test activities.

The role also includes responsibility for maintaining a clean, safe and well organized workshop facility for colleagues and visiting staff. This will also include liaising with internal and external suppliers, and managing consumable inventories. This role does not include management of other staff members.

Additional responsibilities may include transporting equipment to and from offsite testing facilities, assisting the manufacturing facility with product or component support, or visiting customer sites for product feedback and fault diagnosis purposes. The ability to tow vehicles with a 3\.5t plant trailer would also be beneficial.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

· Performs functional evaluations of prototypes. Documents the results of the evaluation. Evaluates field failures to determine root cause. Works with suppliers to further evaluate failed components.

· Carry out test programs and field trials.

· Construct prototypes per the design requirements.

· Liaise effectively and work efficiently with other members of the Design / Development team.

· Design and development of specialized test stands and test equipment.

· Some travel may be required to local field test sites along with remote test locations for data acquisition or performance evaluations.

· Supports assembly with introduction of new products and fault diagnostics.

· Travel to test houses to support product testing.

· Performs other duties as may be required.

· Assists with maintenance of local test facilities including grassed areas.

Communicates with Engineering, Manufacturing, Assembly, Service, Marketing, Support Market Research and Purchasing departments.

Experience or background in the following is essential:

Minimum 5 years’ experience, ideally 10\+ years in a similar role.

A varied practical background including special purpose off\-road machinery.

Experience with diesel and / or battery powered mobile equipment, hydraulics and electrical systems.

Experience testing products or equipment against controlled procedures.

Experience with typical workshop equipment: Hand tools, Lathes, Mills, Drills, Welding Equipment etc.

Working knowledge of typical Microsoft systems Word, Excel, Outlook.

Experience of the following is desired:

Experience working in alignment with any product safety standards (BS, EN, ISO).

Experience of Hydraulic testing equipment (Data Acquisition / Installation).

Diesel engines with Electronic fuel injection and DPF. (Fault finding / Installation).

Petrol engines (Fault finding / Installation).

Electrically powered equipment. (Fault finding / Installation).

Control system programming for test rigs (Arduino).

Use of rapid prototyping technologies (FDM, MLSA).
