The locations for this role are Newport, Fareham (Titchfield) and London.

This role is aligned to ONS hybrid working principles, which are based on attending the office with purpose. The postholder will be expected to contribute to the organisation’s overall 40% office attendance, in line with business and role requirements.

The induction process for the role will be conducted in person.

Due to workforce controls you can only select Manchester / Darlington / Belfast / Edinburgh if you are an existing ONS employee contracted to that location. If you are not contracted at one of these sites, these options are not available to you.

Only existing ONS contractual homeworkers can select Homeworking.

Job summary

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering a range of key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the size, geographic distribution and characteristics of the population, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime and migration.

The ONS Dissemination is responsible for the dissemination of all ONS data via the website and APIs. We are undergoing a transformation to a new hosting Platform on AWS Kubernetes to host the website, APIs and all supporting services.

As part of the Dissemination Platform team you will be responsible for:

  • Working within the team; assisting in development activities including CI/CD, backing services and infrastructure, observability stack, and AWS Kubernetes Platform

  • Troubleshooting and bug\-fixing for issues on the new hosting platform

  • Coaching and mentoring team members

  • Collaborating with others to design solutions and taking guidance from the Technical Lead

  • Producing documentation and knowledge transfer with team members
After onboarding, you'll spend approximately one week every five weeks with a rota\-d team, supporting live dissemination services during office hours. You'll also handle market\-sensitive publishing once a month between 6:30 and 8:30 am, this currently comes with a discretionary allowance.

Job description

As a Senior DevSecOps Engineer, you will deliver and integrate software and infrastructure to form critical elements of our service delivery. You will be responsible for delivering more complex solutions, including integration into wider technologies as appropriate.

You will:

  • Transform technical requirements into an effective DevSecOps roadmap to enable product delivery.

  • Provide coaching and mentoring to more junior colleagues.

  • Make sure deployment strategies for products and services are repeatable, secure, scalable, sustainable, and highly available.

  • Have deep technical knowledge, providing support to delivery teams and solving complex problems.
Responsibilities:
  • Authoring and defining Infrastructure as Code

  • Execution, troubleshooting and blueprinting of CI/CD pipelines

  • Working in an Agile team – following and contributing to team standards and ways of working

  • Ability to research and apply new technologies in a self\-sufficient manner

  • Coaching and mentoring team members

  • Collaborating with others to design solutions and taking guidance from the Technical Lead

  • Documentation and knowledge sharing with team members

Essential Skills Criteria

  • Programming and Build (software engineering) \- Practitioner
You can: Collaborate with others when necessary to review specifications. Use the agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium\-to\-high complexity, using the right standards and tools. You contribute to code reviews and give constructive feedback to others.
  • Information Security \- Practitioner
You can: Design solutions and services with security controls included, specifically engineered to mitigate security threats and/or faults.
  • Service support \- Expert
You can: Identify, locate and fix complex service. Advise others on different methodologies and types of service support.
  • Availability and capacity management \- Working
You can: Manage service components to ensure they meet business needs and key performance indicators (KPIs).

Required Technical Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working in public cloud infrastructure

  • Experience supporting and developing on Kubernetes and using Helm

  • Experience developing Terraform modules and environmental stacks

  • Experience using Cloud managed services
