What does the average day look like?
A typical day as a Senior Design Engineer at Network Rail is both varied and rewarding. You'll lead a team of talented designers, guiding them to deliver technically accurate and cost\-effective solutions on time and to a high standard. Your day will involve developing and managing engineering options that balance safety, reliability, and sustainability, while keeping a close eye on performance, budget, and environmental impact. You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to refine designs, review standards compliance, and ensure robust risk management. From mentoring junior engineers to overseeing design approvals, you'll play a key role in shaping projects that improve the railway network. Whether reviewing proposals, coordinating with project engineers, or supporting design assurance through CDM duties, your expertise will help deliver safe, efficient, and innovative infrastructure for the future of rail travel.
About the team..
Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.
As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Senior Design Engineer to join Network Rail. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in Geotechnical Engineering / Engineering Geology / railway engineering design, a solid understanding of industry standards, and experience leading design projects from concept through to delivery. You'll be responsible for ensuring that designs are safe, efficient, and compliant, while supporting junior engineers and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams. This role suits someone who is detail\-oriented, proactive, and passionate about delivering high\-quality engineering solutions that keep Britain's railway running safely and reliably.
Essential Criteria
- An engineering degree or equivalent industry\-recognised training qualification.
- A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
- Strong evaluation and decision\-making skills.
- A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
- An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
- An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
- CDM, Auditing and risk assessment competencies.
Desirable Criteria
- Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
- Experience in design, installation and maintenance.
- Actively working towards professional accreditation such as CEng, IEng, or CGeol or equivalent relevant to the discipline.
