Pay £28\.00 \- £33\.00 per hour / DOE
Job Description:
Location: Community venue – Bromsgrove, Worcestershire
Hours: 10 hours per week – 2\.5 hours per day, four days per week
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, 9:30am–12:00pm
Start Date: ASAP
Subjects: English, Maths \& Science
Delivery: 1:1 face\-to\-face tuition at a community venue, with a parent present
Needs: Autism, ADHD, SEMH, anxiety, emotionally based school non\-attendance (EBSA) and sensory processing needs
Tutor: No gender preference – calm, patient and predictable
The Role
Study Mind is seeking a warm, patient and relationship\-focused SEN Tutor to provide 1:1 tuition for an 8\-year\-old boy in Year 4\.
The student has an EHCP with Social, Emotional and Mental Health as his primary area of need. He is autistic, has ADHD and experiences significant anxiety around school, which has greatly affected his attendance and progress.
He is currently working below age\-related expectations in English, Maths and Science. However, his EHCP is clear that his barriers are driven by anxiety and emotional need rather than cognitive difficulty.
Sessions will take place at a community venue in Bromsgrove, with a parent present throughout.
Academic Focus
The tutor will provide personalised support across the core primary subjects, pitched according to his current starting point.
The initial focus should be on building confidence and identifying gaps through relaxed, low\-pressure activities rather than formal assessment.
English
Reading and phonics consolidation
Reading comprehension
Speaking and listening
Vocabulary development
Writing, using technology and alternative recording methods
Maths
Number and place value
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Practical and visual Maths
Problem\-solving
Building confidence attempting new tasks
Science
Practical, hands\-on investigations
Asking questions and exploring ideas
Observing, sorting and recording
He does not like writing with pen and paper, so technology, typing, photos, verbal responses and other alternative recording methods should be used wherever possible.
A Capable Learner Held Back by Anxiety
It is important that the successful tutor recognises that his current attainment reflects anxiety and missed education rather than a lack of ability.
He is inquisitive, asks lots of questions, has a strong visual memory and likes things to be organised and well presented. With the right support, he has every chance to close his gaps.
Relationship Before Demand
A consistent and trusted tutor is essential.
He is anxious about getting things wrong and about how others see him, so rapport and emotional safety must come before academic demand.
The successful tutor should be:
Calm and reassuring
Patient
Predictable and consistent
Encouraging, with plenty of praise for effort
Comfortable allowing trust to develop gradually
Observant of subtle signs of anxiety
Autism \& Communication
His understanding and use of language are developing in line with his age, and he enjoys talking to adults about his interests. However, he can find it difficult to:
Take turns in conversation
Read social cues
Show or talk about his feelings
Cope with small changes or things being out of order
He may have limited facial expression, which can make it hard to tell when he is becoming anxious.
The tutor should use clear, calm communication, visual supports and simple visual problem\-solving when he misreads a situation.
Anxiety, EBSA \& Emotional Regulation
He experiences high levels of anxiety, particularly around transitions and change, and can become dysregulated when overwhelmed.
The tutor should use:
Predictable routines and a consistent session structure
Advance preparation for any change
Daily check\-ins at the start and end of each session
A calm, safe space
A gentle de\-escalation approach
Reassurance and encouragement
Short, achievable tasks with clear success
Sensory Needs
He has sensory processing difficulties and a restless presentation, with a need for regular movement.
The tutor should incorporate:
Regular movement and sensory breaks
Tactile sensory tools
A quiet, calm working space
Flexibility around his sensory needs
Interests \& Engagement
He enjoys:
Technology
Practical, hands\-on jobs with a visual result
Organising and putting things in order
These interests provide excellent opportunities for learning.
For example:
Technology can support typing, research, Maths games and presentations
Sorting and organising can support Maths, Science classification and sequencing
Practical tasks can support measurement, instructions and problem\-solving
Structuring the Sessions
Sessions should not consist of two and a half hours of continuous formal learning.
Initially, a session might include:
Calm check\-in
Visual overview of the session
Short interest\-led activity
Maths or English learning block
Movement or sensory break
Practical Science or technology\-based activity
Second short learning block
Calm check\-out and preview of the next session
The structure should remain predictable while allowing flexibility according to how he presents on the day.
The Ideal Tutor
We are looking for a tutor who:
Has experience supporting autistic children and children with ADHD
Understands SEMH needs, anxiety and EBSA
Can confidently teach KS2 English, Maths and Science
Is confident using technology for learning and recording
Understands sensory processing needs
Uses a calm, nurturing and structured approach
Can build trust gradually with young children
Is comfortable working with a parent present
Can provide consistency throughout the placement
Experience within Alternative Provision, EOTAS, primary SEN settings or specialist tuition would be particularly valuable.
What Success Looks Like
Initially, success will focus on:
Building trust with a consistent tutor
Feeling safe and knowing what to expect in sessions
Engaging positively in short activities
Rebuilding confidence as a learner
From there, the placement should work towards:
Closing gaps in English, Maths and Science
Increasing sustained engagement
Developing emotional awareness and regulation strategies
Improving confidence when facing new or challenging tasks
Supporting a positive relationship with learning
Hours \& Location
10 hours per week – 2\.5 hours per day
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30am to 12:00pm
Sessions will take place face\-to\-face at a community venue in Bromsgrove, with a parent present.
This role would particularly suit a gentle, organised and dependable SEN Tutor who can help a bright, anxious young boy feel safe and confident in learning again.
