Section Engineer

Section Engineer (Major Projects) Start Date: October 5th

Working Hours: 10-hour working days (Monday - Friday; potential for weekend work with agreed rates)

Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer to take ownership of a specific discipline section within major civil engineering and highways projects. This role involves leading a team of Site Engineers, overseeing technical quality, driving productivity, and ensuring the highest safety standards across the section.

The immediate project scope includes temporary compound setup, gas diversions, and preparatory works ahead of the main works scheme.

Key ResponsibilitiesHealth, Safety & Environmental • Produce, review, and maintain Method Statements, Risk Assessments, and Permits to Work.

• Prepare and raise Temporary Works Briefs and manage implementation.


• Drive a culture of "Zero Harm," carry out site inductions, undertake incident investigations, and mentor junior staff in safety audits.

Engineering Control & Quality • Carry out complex setting out and establish primary setting out control.

• Produce, manage, and execute Activity Control Plans (ACP) / Inspection & Test Plans (ITP).


• Ensure site engineers complete quality check sheets on time and maintain detailed quality records.


• Identify, raise, and track Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and Requests for Information / Technical Queries (RFIs) to resolution.

Management, Productivity & Commercial • Directly lead and mentor a team of Site Engineers, providing guidance on setting out techniques and specifications.

• Produce weekly programmes, set targets for the workforce, track progress against KPIs, and analyse variances.


• Coordinate closely with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure works align with schedule, specifications, and contract terms.


• Maintain detailed site diaries, collate weekly measure details, manage labor/plant reconciliations, and log variations or additional work items.

Candidate RequirementsEssential Experience & Qualifications • Sector Experience: Proven track record working on Highways / Motorways projects (Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Comms, Structures, or Roadworks).

• Certifications: Valid CSCS Card, SSSTS or SMSTS, and a full Driving License.


• Technical Expertise: Advanced competency in complex setting out, interpreting engineering drawings, permit systems, and quality handovers.


• Key Traits: Strong safety focus, clear communication skills, ability to manage teams, and flexibility to work unsociable hours/nights if required.

Desirable Qualifications • Progressing toward professional accreditation (e.g., ICE, IHT).

• Advanced leadership and independent decision-making experience.
