Puma Berry Ltd is a UK defence engineering SME that delivers specialist, security\-cleared capability for complex mission programmes, combining SQEP with delivery governance and assurance.

We are seeking an experienced SC\-Cleared Safety Engineer for an anticipated UK defence engineering assignment.

The role supports acquisition safety across complex equipment, systems and services. You will provide practical safety\-engineering advice, develop and manage technical safety documentation, and support the delivery of safe and suitable capability.

This opportunity is currently at the competitive bidding stage. Puma Berry is engaging suitably qualified candidates in advance; appointment is subject to successful contract award.

Contract details

  • Contract: Inside IR35

  • Anticipated start: ASAP

  • Anticipated end: 31 March 2027 \+ likely extension

  • Location: Hybrid, with regular attendance at Abbey Wood, Bristol approximately 3–4 days per week

  • Rate: Up to £475 per day

  • Travel: Normal travel to the Abbey Wood base location must be included within the daily rate. Any additional travel and subsistence will be subject to prior agreement.

  • Termination: The engagement is subject to a 5\-day termination provision.
Key duties
  • Develop and manage technical safety requirements and documentation for equipment and sub\-systems.

  • Support effective Safety Management Systems and the delivery of acquisition\-safety activity.

  • Identify hazards, assess risks and support the identification and management of suitable risk\-reduction measures.

  • Apply relevant safety legislation, regulation, policy, processes and standards.

  • Support safety assurance, audit, verification, validation, testing and evaluation activity.

  • Provide informed safety advice to delivery teams, stakeholders and Project Safety Panels.

  • Manage and escalate technical, safety and delivery risks appropriately.

  • Work with MOD teams, contractors and partners; review or coordinate technical outputs where required.

  • Support continuous improvement in safety\-engineering processes and delivery.
Essential requirements
  • Active, current UK Security Check (SC) clearance.

  • Sole UK nationality, due to customer security requirements.

  • Proven experience delivering safety systems, safety acquisition or safety\-engineering outcomes.

  • A STEM qualification at RQF Level 4 or above and professional registration as EngTech or RSciTech; or a STEM qualification at RQF Level 6 or above if not professionally registered.

  • Experience applying safety legislation, standards, policy and processes in a regulated engineering environment.

  • Experience of safety risk management, hazard identification, safety assurance or Safety Management Systems.

  • Ability to attend Abbey Wood, Bristol approximately 3–4 days per week.

  • Availability to start promptly and commit through 31 March 2027\.
Equivalent Scottish or international qualifications may be accepted where supported by appropriate evidence of equivalence.

Highly desirable

  • Defence, MOD, aerospace, maritime, land or other complex regulated\-engineering experience.

  • Experience of technical safety requirements, safety cases, hazard logs, safety assessments or risk\-reduction activity.

  • Experience supporting system verification, validation, testing or evaluation.

  • Experience working with technical stakeholders, suppliers, contractors or project safety panels.

  • Professional membership or registration with a relevant engineering, safety or science institution.
