About us
------------

UCL is one of the world’s leading universities, with a thriving research and innovation community committed to addressing complex challenges and delivering positive impact locally, nationally and globally.

Research, Innovation and Global Engagement (RIGE) brings together more than 300 colleagues across Research, Innovation \& Enterprise, Global Engagement, and Pan\-RIGE Strategy, Policy \& Delivery, working collectively to support UCL’s strategic priorities.

The Integrative Cross\-Faculty Investment Fund (IxFI) is UCL’s strategic internal investment fund for ambitious interdisciplinary research and innovation. Since its launch in 2023, IxFI has grown rapidly and now supports a substantial portfolio of strategically important investments, bringing together expertise across faculties, developing emerging areas of research strength and creating opportunities for external funding and capacity building.

About the role
------------------

We are seeking a Research Portfolio Manager – Integrative Cross\-Faculty Investment Fund (IxFI) to join RIGE.

Please note, this role is available to current UCL staff only and is offered as a 12\-month fixed\-term secondment.

This is a varied and influential role providing strategic and operational leadership for the IxFI portfolio. You will act as the central point of ownership for the fund’s day\-to\-day management, overseeing the full funding lifecycle from horizon scanning and applicant engagement through to assessment, governance, financial oversight, award management, monitoring and impact evaluation.

Working closely with senior colleagues across RIGE, Finance and UCL’s academic community, you will help ensure investments remain aligned with UCL’s strategic priorities and support opportunities for future external funding, research excellence and institutional impact.

You will manage a complex portfolio of research projects, support academics in developing interdisciplinary proposals, oversee governance and funding processes, and contribute to financial planning, reporting and portfolio evaluation. You will also play an important role in continually improving IxFI’s processes, guidance and ways of working.

About you
-------------

The successful candidate will bring strong knowledge of the research and innovation funding landscape, particularly multidisciplinary research within a higher education setting, alongside experience of managing complex research or innovation portfolios involving multiple stakeholders.

Experience of supporting complex funding applications and navigating institutional approval processes is essential, together with a strong understanding of financial planning and budget management. The role also requires the ability to analyse complex information, make well\-informed recommendations and produce clear reports and papers for senior decision\-makers.

Strong organisational, project management and relationship\-building skills are key, with the ability to work collaboratively with academics, Principal Investigators and Professional Services colleagues while balancing multiple priorities and exercising sound judgement.

Experience of portfolio monitoring and evaluation, Worktribe or an equivalent research costing system, and Power BI would be advantageous.
