Relief Passenger Assistant – Guaranteed £100 Weekly Standby Payment

Location: Easton, Bristol
Working Pattern: Monday–Friday, school term time only
Standby Payment: £100 per full school week, plus enhanced payments when deployed
Typical Deployment Payment: £13–£20 per journey, depending on route requirements

A different kind of Passenger Assistant role

Techxi is looking for a reliable, flexible and dependable Relief Passenger Assistant to provide standby cover for our school transport services.

Unlike our regular Passenger Assistants, you will not be allocated one permanent school run.

Instead, you will be our designated Relief Passenger Assistant for the area, providing cover when one of our regular Passenger Assistants is unavailable due to sickness, annual leave or other absence.

In return for committing to being available throughout the school week, you will receive a guaranteed standby payment of £100 per full school week – even if you are not called out at all.

This role would particularly suit someone who has excellent availability during school term time and is looking for flexible work without needing to provide their own transport.

How the standby payment works

There are 10 potential school transport periods each week:

  • 5 morning journeys

  • 5 afternoon journeys
Your guaranteed £100 weekly standby payment is allocated at £10 per standby period.

If you are not required, you retain the £10 standby payment for that period.

If you are required to work, the £10 standby payment for that period is replaced by the full Passenger Assistant payment for the journey, normally between £13 and £20, depending on factors including the length and duration of the journey and the individual needs of the passengers.

For example, if you remained on standby all week and were called upon to cover three school runs, you would receive the appropriate Passenger Assistant rate for those three runs and the standby payment for the remaining seven periods.

If a journey takes longer than its standard allocated duration while passengers are on board, the working payment will be adjusted accordingly.

When must I be available?

This is a dedicated standby position, so reliable availability is an essential requirement of the role.

During school term time, you must be at home, contactable by mobile telephone and available to be collected during the required morning and afternoon periods.

As a guide:

Morning: You may be contacted between approximately 6:00am and 8:00am. Depending on the route, you would normally be returned home by approximately 9:30am–10:00am.

Afternoon: You must be available for collection from approximately 1:30pm–2:00pm. Depending on the route, you would normally be returned home between approximately 4:00pm and 5:00pm.

These times are indicative because every school transport route is different.

You must have access to a reliable mobile phone and be able to answer calls from our Dispatch Team during the standby periods.

What happens when I'm needed?

Our Dispatch Team will contact you and provide information about the journey, including the route, destination and relevant information regarding the passengers you will be supporting.

The assigned driver will collect you directly from your home address and return you home after the journey. You will not be expected to make your own way to a meeting point or use your own vehicle.

Our drivers are familiar with their regular passengers and will also be able to provide practical information about the journey and the individuals you will be supporting.

Because you are providing relief across multiple routes, you should be comfortable working with different drivers, passengers, schools and journey requirements.

How often will I actually work?

This is a new position, so we cannot guarantee how frequently you will be deployed.

Our current estimate is approximately 3–6 journeys per week, but this will vary considerably.

There may be weeks where you are not deployed at all and still receive your full standby payment. Equally, you could potentially cover all 10 journeys during a week where a regular Passenger Assistant is unavailable for an extended period.

Flexibility is therefore extremely important.

Availability and reliability

The purpose of this position is to provide Techxi with reliable cover when our regular team members are unavailable. We are therefore looking for someone who can make a genuine commitment to being available throughout school term time.

Where you know that you will be unavailable, we ask for as much advance notice as reasonably possible. For planned commitments, 6–8 weeks' notice is preferred and at least two weeks' notice should normally be provided wherever possible.

We understand that genuine emergencies and unexpected illness happen and ask that you provide as much notice as reasonably possible in those circumstances.

Where you make yourself unavailable for a standby period, the corresponding £10 standby payment will not be payable.

Regular failure to remain available, repeated failure to answer calls during standby periods or repeated inability to accept cover may result in Techxi reviewing whether the arrangement remains suitable.

Because of the nature of the position, it is best suited to someone who does not have other regular commitments during school transport hours.

School holidays and closures

This is a school term\-time only position.

The £100 weekly standby payment applies to full operational school weeks and is not payable during scheduled school holidays.

Bank holidays and known school closure/INSET days will be communicated in advance where applicable.

Where unexpected circumstances such as severe weather result in school closures, we will communicate any impact on the standby arrangement as soon as reasonably possible.

Enhanced DBS

Because you will be working with children and potentially vulnerable passengers, an appropriate Enhanced DBS check will be required.

Techxi will pay the cost of obtaining the required Enhanced DBS certificate.

You will be required to maintain your DBS certificate on the DBS Update Service, with the annual subscription cost (currently £16\) being your responsibility.

Training and support

Previous Passenger Assistant experience is helpful but is not essential for the right person.

Techxi will provide appropriate training where required, including the information and guidance necessary to safely support the passengers travelling on our services.

We are particularly interested in people who are:

  • Extremely reliable and punctual

  • Calm and resilient

  • Comfortable working with children and vulnerable passengers

  • Able to adapt quickly to different passengers and routes

  • Comfortable receiving work at short notice

  • Confident communicating with drivers, our Dispatch Team, schools and passengers

  • Able to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality

  • Flexible throughout school term time

  • Dependable when other members of the team are unavailable
Important – please consider your availability before applying

This is not a conventional school\-run position.

You are being paid a guaranteed weekly standby payment specifically in return for maintaining availability to provide relief cover.

Please only apply if you can genuinely commit to being available throughout the school term and are comfortable being assigned to different school transport routes at short notice.

For someone with the right availability and mindset, this offers the opportunity to receive £100 per full school week even when no cover is required, with increased payments whenever you are deployed.

Application question(s):
  • During school term time, are you able to keep both the morning and afternoon periods free Monday–Friday, with no regular commitments that would prevent you accepting a school run at short notice?

  • This is a relief role, so you may not know whether you're working until we call you that morning or afternoon. How comfortable would you be with this type of working arrangement?

  • Our driver will collect you from your home when you're required for a school run. Do you live in Easton, Bristol, or the surrounding area?

  • The role pays £100 per full school week for remaining available across all 10 standby periods, even if you aren't required. When you are called out, the £10 standby payment for that period is replaced by the higher Passenger Assistant journey rate of £13–£20\. Are you happy with and comfortable working under this payment arrangement?

  • Do you understand that during the advertised standby periods, you will need to remain at home, contactable by phone and ready to be collected by one of our drivers at short notice if cover is required?
