Quantity Surveyor

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join a well-established civil engineering contractor delivering projects across the UK. The role will sit within the commercial team, reporting to the Commercial Manager, and will involve a combination of office-based working and travel to project sites as required.

The successful candidate will take commercial responsibility for assigned projects, managing applications for payment, variations, procurement, contractual matters, cost and value reporting, forecasting and commercial risk. You will also work closely with project teams to ensure contractual requirements and commercial procedures are understood and followed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer main contracts and subcontracts, including payment mechanisms, change procedures and final accounts.

  • Manage contractual notices, time bars, payment provisions and change control.

  • Maintain commercial registers covering variations, compensation events, payments, correspondence and instructions.

  • Provide contractual advice and prepare relevant commercial correspondence.

  • Work with standard forms of contract including NEC, FIDIC and JCT, alongside bespoke agreements where required.

  • Manage project budgets, cost forecasting and commercial controls.

  • Prepare cost value reconciliations, profitability forecasts and financial outturn information.

  • Prepare and submit interim applications for payment, ensuring appropriate supporting information is provided.

  • Manage interim valuations and resolve any assessment differences.

  • Develop and maintain project cashflow forecasts.

  • Manage supply chain procurement and subcontract packages, including tender analysis and commercial comparisons.

  • Monitor subcontractor performance and identify potential commercial risks.

  • Lead the identification, pricing, submission and negotiation of compensation events, variations and other contractual entitlement.

  • Produce detailed pricing build-ups using labour, plant, materials, quotations and measured quantities.

  • Maintain accurate and auditable commercial records to support valuations and claims.

  • Use project programmes and contemporary records to support matters relating to delay, disruption and extensions of time.

  • Prepare Bills of Quantities, Schedules of Rates and Activity Schedules.

  • Manage interim and final accounts, including remeasurement.

  • Build strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, the supply chain and internal project teams.

  • Attend commercial and progress meetings, providing clear updates on cost, value, change and commercial risk.

Skills & Experience The ideal candidate will have:
  • Previous experience working as a Quantity Surveyor or within a similar commercial construction role.

  • Experience administering NEC contracts.

  • A strong commercial understanding of construction operations.

  • Good problem-solving and stakeholder management skills.

  • Strong IT skills, including Excel and commercial management systems.

  • A good understanding of health & safety, quality and environmental requirements.

Qualifications
  • HND or degree in Quantity Surveying or another relevant commercial discipline.

  • Working towards, or willing to work towards, professional membership such as RICS, CIOB or ICES.

  • Appropriate CSCS card, or willingness to obtain one.

  • Chartered status, or progress towards chartership, would be advantageous.

Desirable Experience
Experience within aviation, airfields, highways or wider infrastructure projects would be particularly beneficial. Candidates with experience working on framework contracts or within live operational environments such as airside, live traffic or secure sites will also be of interest.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially focused Quantity Surveyor looking to join an established contractor with exposure to technically interesting civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the UK.
