Practice Nurse (Part Time)
Salary \- Dependant on experience
Working Hours \- 21hrs per week. To be discussed during interview process.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic nurse to join our friendly team.
The ideal candidate must be NMC registered with primary care experience.
The role will be varied, covering all aspects of general practice and will involve working collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients.

The post holder must be currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and maintain membership of a professional organisation (e.g.RCN)
JOB SUMMARY
To provide high standards of nursing services to meet the needs of the practice patients
Responsible for
- Assessment, planning, initiating investigations, implementation of treatment and evaluation of patient care without supervision
- Treatment Room tasks including health screening and education, vaccinations and immunisations, cervical cytology, contraception and sexual health, smoking cessation, ear syringing and wound care
Operates as a team member to contribute to the organisation of the practice, working along side General Practitioner’s, nurses, nurse associate, practice manager, reception and administrative staff and the wider multi\-disciplinary team
Supports the practice to facilitate the achievement of practice and local aspired targets and service delivery
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Organise and prioritise daily clinics and workload
- Ensure consent for all procedures and injections
- Accurate and skilled use of equipment to perform measurements and observations
- New Patient Checks
- Health Assessments – Offer health promotion/life style advice as necessary
- Hypertension monitoring – use of manual and automated BP monitor
- Perform Electro Cardiogram Recording (ECG)
- Wound management – Minor injuries, post\-op care, burns, leg ulcers
Refer for doppler assessment to competent nurse
Compression Bandaging where indicated
Evaluate treatment plan
- Removal of sutures or clips
- Administer IM/SC Injections according to GP or Consultant instructions in line with protocols and PGD \-

- Childhood Immunisations – awareness of current regime. Advise and reassure parents concerns sensitively and professionally. Liase with Health Visitor
- Travel Vaccinations – Use of literature and online information services to advise patients of recommended vaccinations. Malaria prophylaxis and travel advice
- Contraception and Sexual Health – Oral contraceptive pill checks, Contraceptive Injection (Depo\- Provera), Contraceptive and Sexual health advice. Obtaining swabs to screen for sexually transmitted infections. Coil checks. Pregnancy tests.
- Cervical Cytology – Obtain cervical smear samples. Awareness of national cervical screening programme, call and re\-call proceedures
- Venepuncture – obtain blood samples as requested by GP or inacordance with practice protocols for health screening or for annual/bi\-annual chronic disease management
- Smoking Cessation – one to one support programme. Carbon Monoxide measurments. NRT, Champix or Zyban initiation according to practice protocol and PCT guidlines.
- Assist with minor surgery and coil fitting/change of coil.
- Competent in anaphylaxis and CPR resusitation.
- Competent in use of equipment – oxygen, nebuliser, peak flow meter, capillary blood gluocse measurement, urine analysis, oxygen saturation levels
- Adheres to infection control and sharps disposal policies
- Interpretation of results
- Attend to patient enquiries and messages
- Telephone Triage
- Maintain confidentiality
- Maintain accurate record keeping
- Awareness of referral mechanisms to muti\-disciplinary agencies
- Carry out other duties that may be deemed necessary by practice manager or partnership to assist in the smooth running of the practice
The nurse must have attended all relevant training sessions and study days to attain the reqiured knowledge and skills to enable her to carry out the job competently and efficiently
Regular updates must be undertaken in accordance with PCT policy, including annual CPR and anaylaxis management
Judgements regarding patient care will be made according to knowledge, skills and experience, based on research and evidence based practice
Annual practice appraisal with practice manager and one GP partner to review previous years performance and achievement of goals set. To discuss further training and professional development plan pertinent to the role for following year
Maintain a current professional portfolio
COMMUNICATION
Confidentiality
Confidentiality MUST be maintained at all times regarding patient information
If leaving a patient alone in the consultation room, the patients notes must be removed and the computer screen loged off
Children under 16 years of age must be assessed to be “Fraser competent” and then confidentiality will be maintained. (i.e. contraception/sexual health/child protection)
Record all relevant information obtained from consultations onto computer and maintain accurate records
Cascade relevant information to members of practice and multi\-disciplinary team
Share information gained at training and study days with nursing coleagues
Liase with multi\-disciplinary team and refer appropriately
Attend regular practice meeting and nurse team meetings as required
Communicate sensitively with patients and relatives regarding conditions, dieases and results of tests/investigations
Ensure nurse manager is made aware of any concerns or problems relating to patients, staff or working conditions
LEADERSHIP
Demonstate ability to work effectively as part of the practice team
Organise own specialist clinics and workload
Endevour to work within designated patient appointment times
Participate towards develpments and suggestions to improve patient and practice care and nursing policies/protocols
Profesional and clinical Supervision and mentoring of students/new employees
Assist in induction of new staff to practice role
Assist health care assistant with problems encountered outside of her limitations or job description
Assist reception and admin staff with problems or queries associated with patient care or treatment
The post holder will be required to contribute to the provision of holiday and sickness cover for colleagues. It is therefore essential to be flexible regarding hours of work
